Those who thought COVID was sensationalized back in March, were vocally against business closures and lockdowns, and have since changed their mind - in a moment of reflection, why did you originally think that way? Going forward, what do you think could be done to prevent that attitude or perspective in others?

This is a thoughtful question. I look forward to the comments section turning into a blood sport.

Hahaha OP, the discussion here is way more nuanced than news channels. Shout out for keeping it civil and avoiding name calling !

I’ll start - I was subconsciously indifferent on the situation knowing I’d come out okay relative to most. Also, human nature prioritizes being risk adverse and I tend to find opportunity in moments that trait shines. Not realizing or taking stock in the human cost made it easy to disregard, looking back I’m shocked how easy it is to feel detached from people you don’t know. I think having more diverse connections would have helped me see the true impact. Also somehow being able to gauge or measure the difference between media sensationalism and real news would be helpful..

I originally thought the whole thing was overhyped. I remembered the freakouts that occurred every few years since the original SARS outbreak, and figured this was another swine flu/ mad cow disease media sensationalized topic that would blow over with little impact to most folks. I think it chalked up to the lack of information that was available at the time and how jaded I had become with the “constant overreaction to news headlines” cycle. Not sure there’s much to change that moving forward, we have to be diligent when we hear news and do our research from multiple sources - but it’s hard. Professionals are often wrong (see: WHO) or have ulterior motives. Don’t really have an answer unfortunately. Sometimes only time can tell.

like

I thought it was overhyped because of the low fatality rate and the contradictory statements from the WHO. I also put too much stock in our government to be prepared for this

1) Highlight the decision making process — why is a lock down necessary at this time - Hospitalization rate, testing numbers, positivity rate, we know fuckall about this disease so we need to figure shit out? 2) What are the pros/ cons of the lockdown and have they been considered from a socioeconomic standpoint rather than a primarily medical standpoint. How will we address job losses, mental health etc. 3) What is the end goal of the lockdown? Flatten the curve v/s. Build healthcare infrastructure (hospitals, testing etc.) v/s. Wait for vaccine 4) Have a defined answer to when will this end and how it will end — when certain metrics are met on healthcare like testing and beds, vaccine is available, treatment is better. Reopening strategy — what will reopen and what will not 5) What will cause a new lockdown I spent a lot of time understanding the different metrics and at the time came to a conclusion that the lockdown was the best way forward. This caused a lot of mental stress and anxiety. Its basic communication, unfortunately the current strategy is lets wing it and see what happens — on both sides (pro lockdown and anti lockdown). If we address everyones fears and move ahead together like EU, this will end sooner and more easily rather than if we name call one side “anti-science” and the other side “anti-freedom”. People are allowed to have different views.

I think COVID's impact was grossly under rated but I was not going to let is slide personally after seeing China built huge make shift hospitals unless they anticipated that. I think if the world stop thinking NIMBY to every global issues then we could have drastically reduce the economic impact. But again societies are ran by people and people are inherently selfish and prone to being reactive. Therefore the result is not as surprising to me. I am grateful that the virus is not more lethal than it is and at least we have the technology to work from home. Imagine this happening during before WWI during the first globalization (Spanish Flu doesn't count because it happened during and after the war when life was already altered). Honestly, not to be cruel but I think the western world just isn't used to dealing with life and death in the same ways as the developing world. We are entitled to life and liberty so culturally adapting to the new normal has been harder than it should have been..

Great responses. Seems like a lack of information is the main takeaway. If other countries were able to handle this better with seemingly less opposition, do you think their citizens had more information, were more risk adverse as a society, or just that the government made centralized decisions without constituent input? Interested in seeing more viewpoints.

All fair points. However I’m more curious to see how your own views were shaped, and what could’ve been done to change them, during the onset of the outbreak. A lot of what I’m reading from your comment is how the crisis could have been handled better directly, which is important, but not much on why people think the way they think in the first place that causes them to make those decisions.

5 years ago I had a crush on a girl. Things were so different then; we used to hang out, talking about things which were utterly random and I loved watching her smile. I ultimately fell for her and we started dating. I spent the best time of my life with her. 1 year ago today, I lost her to COVID. Still, cannot get over her. Looking at the desperation in this bowl, I just want to say - hope you find the one, but this is not the right way. Desperation doesn't appeal anyone.
