Start at 0900. Work until 1800. Take a few hours of for dinner, a workout, and mental break. Press on until 0200. That’s a 14 hour day. Run that Mon-Thurs with 8hr on Friday, and you’re at a light ~65hrs/wk.

Days are filled with content discussions, client calls, research, and slide building. I spent the past week framing out a shell deck and the past two days filling it out. I am at 40 pages so far.

Today, my team aligned on our framework and client objectives, we defined our criteria for success, and set up our storyline. We have 20 segments to address for this project, and we completed the hypothesis for one today. Goal is to have 6 ready for the MDP tomorrow as a strawman of output alongside the framework.

We have two more expert calls calendared for this week. Goal is completion of all 20 segments by Friday. We then present to client next week and get our data requests to establish our cost figures.

I’m also organizing an internal affiliation event for all of North America and have a pile of internal networking emails for my PA I need to still reply to... this is exhausting 😭

Yeah there were definitely several months where I was leading and attending multiple meetings throughout the day including daily 2-3 hour working sessions, working on debugging issues that would come up during those sessions, developing solutions for those issues, reviewing test cases. Most of the time, the issues weren’t cut and dry and required additional discussions with different business leads to come up with a solution that satisfied everyone’s concerns. I probably wasn’t the most efficient but I was working from 8:00am to 8:00pm at least every day and some weekends. But it’s ok because I got a 47% raise after that

I feel it’s full days of meetings and then additional hours to do actual work. Personally, I love WFH because I multi task during every meeting I can so I don’t have to work extra hours.

Yeah that’s like 9 hours of actual work. Still not getting there

It’s a full day of meetings and a full evening or occasional all nighter of actual productive work on the weekdays, and sometimes catching-up or getting ahead on the weekend

But thanks to the pandemic and remote work now I can multitask and be productive DURING the meetings.

I do IT implementation work and have had a string of 50-65 hour weeks for the past few months.

The reason is because an incompetent Oracle team deployed their product they clearly only half understand to production which has (and continues to!) periodically tank the client's enterprise IT system. This means an enormous amount of cleanup from my team, but since they don't know what they're doing, they can't fix the root cause.

Well, lately I’ve been 50+ hours and it’s been nonstop. When I’m working 80+ hours it’s nonstop with constant deliverables. Generally it’s meetings with client, internally about client, or preparing deliverables.

I don’t believe it’s inefficiency on my part. We’re just stretched thin and there’s too much work.

I took a nap last week for a couple of hours. First time I’ve done that during Covid. Just so tired.

There are plenty of good reasons to get to 60 hours / week without being too inefficient, but one is simply needing to get through a ton of slide iterations. If you’re meeting with a client frequently on a short DD, and you need to show significant progress between meetings, you need to get through X slides with Y iteration cycles no matter how long it takes. You can’t just call it a night when the slides are due to the client tomorrow and you’re still only 75% done.

Add in meetings and other miscellaneous case tasks like research and modeling, and that’ll get you to 60+ easily.

I’m currently on a really busy project, but since I can only bill 40 hours to the client, I’m only doing 40 hours 🤣

So many meetings.

Yes, the cause is very often meetings, which are usually inefficient, but most of the time you don't have control over them. I'm often in meetings all day because I can't get out of them, and am expected to participate, so I can't genuinely work through them (when I can, I do). The real work still has to get done on top of the meetings, so if, on a typical day, you have 8+ hours of real work and 6 hours of meetings, it's easy to get to 60+ hours for the week.

Sending emails back and forth and sitting in meetings to discuss which emails need to be sent.

For me I count all the hours I'm tied to my house and can't leave as being stuck at work. Like great I'm not in a meeting and have a free hour. I still can't do anything because if a IM, email, or request comes in I have to be on call to answer.

Being on-call at most jobs counts as hours worked. Sometimes I step away to run to the store but I always have my work phone on me and am conscious of never going more then a 5 minute walk or drive from home. There are some weeks where I truly am bouncing from meeting to working on deliverables for 12hrs straight, also days where I'm in a 9 hour workshop I have to take notes and work after it ends, and also days where great I'm free in between meetings but still stuck at home.

A1 I know great I can set boundaries for occasionally when I have something important or I take a lunch break. I mean everyday saying to my manager and client "hey between meetings dont message me im off limits" wouldn't work on the regular.

Its fine for once in a while to block of time or let people know I consistently have lunch at noon. But everyday saying hey just FYI don't expect a response from me while the whole team is working between meetings wouldn't fly over well.
