Aside from the marketing aspect of “it’s what the market is willing to pay”, you’re looking at super-limited production runs. You’re paying for the opportunity cost of retooling, logistics around small farming (barley from the island), unique peat usage and malting ratios (most distillers on Islay order their malt ratio in bulk from the central granary), specific barrels, etc.
Remember it’s an experimental line and we’re lucky enough to even be able to get it in the states. There’s usually 5-6 different formulations in each year, and that’s on top of what the distillery is turning out for the normal Bruiladdich ranges.
(Plus the bottles are gorgeous)

There’s also unpeated versions - usually of the Islay barley (white bottle) - so definitely check the descriptions and tasting notes for any given year and variant.

I think the success of Octomore is going to lead to a different approach to Scotch production. It’s pulling the industry more in an experimental craft direction, focusing on the locale and unique characteristics rather than volume. I think it will be a net positive for quality and the industry will become more wine-like in the overall approach, but it will mean even higher prices and lower availability than we see today.
