OP - this is very helpful as I’ll be starting my pre-MBA PE stint soon on the investing side. I have a billion questions that I’d love to ask you, but I’ll narrow it down to 3:
(1) How do you like working on the portfolio side? Do you feel equally treated and respected by the investment team?
(2) Do you see yourself in the portfolio side of PE long term? Or using Capstone as a platform to something else?
(3) I know you mentioned that your desire to get into PE was a motivating factor for choosing HBS (over GSB, I presume). What was your sense of PE opportunities coming out of GSB and the finance curriculum there?
I’ve heard getting VP at a MF PE company is quite difficult. That’s typically when the “up or out” model kicks out Associates Are you concerned about being promoted? Are you interested in staying for the long haul?
@C1: base around the same. Difference depends on carry. Gneerally, portfolio has higher carry so tend to have slightly higher payouts. Still more than mbb.
@A1: I networked a lot in B school. Went to NYC every weekend. Networking helped me find a gap, I marketed myself to fill that gap (luckily I was in a very similar practice pre-mba). Was in MBB.
@Acc1: MBB-MBA-PE
@C2: HBS. Yes, I applied to all M7s and got into 6/7. I hate you Columbia (pretty sure I made a spelling mistake or something). I chose HBS because of PE, it was a straightforward choice. If you need help deciding between schools, lemme know for direct advice.
@EY1: answered above
@AC1: for a consultant, it's super hard either way. Maybe easier pre MBA. Either way, you gotta have an MBB on your resume to even stand a slight chance. You're competing with IB and they know more finance than you.
@Acc2: See above for transition. Yes
Sorry for the late response.
@google: I'm up for VP this promo season. I'll let you know how it goes lol. Typically if I don't get VP next year either, I'll just move to a MM. Either way I don't think it's a big deal. We have a good support network for this stuff.
EY2: advice for what? MBA or getting into PE?
Mck2: Top 50 school. Undergrad doesn't matter as you can tell as long as you didn't go to bumf**k-state university. Yes I have seen multiple examples of top50-MBB-HBS-PE. Lower than top 50 and good for you getting into an MBB/HBS.
W <H/S. You may get a "better curriculum" at W, but who cares. You got the MFs at HS. I'll take recruiting over curriculum any day.
@A1: I am on the deal side. I meant to say deal>portfolio/capstone team in general overall comp for C1. But in terms of the culture, it's PE; there's competition but we treat each other well unlike IB. I chose HBS over GSB because the PE opps out of GSB are mainly on the tech side. Plus it's more VC stuff over there. HBS has the KKRs/Blackstones of NYC. It's basically location differences.
@IBM1: for PE/VC? You're not getting into them without HBS/GSB. Even W is unlikely. I have a funny story where a friend with an Emory MBA made it to a MF PE but that's an exception. But if I had to rank in terms of Finance outside M7, it'll be Stern, Ross, Yale, Tuck, Johnson in no order (but Johnson being the lowest).
Using pure numbers is always biased. Wharton has double the number of MBA students. Yet, Stanford ties them in absolute numbers. Statistically speaking, Stanford places better, bringing me to my next point: I disagree with the fixed PE recruiting. A lot of PE recruiting isn't school facilitated. They do have the common recruiting events just like MBB, but there are a lot of students who take the backdoor path. Yes, I won't see as many S graduates as W graduates at KKR, but that's because of location. Stanford graduates flood the bay area VC/PE shops. If we are comparing the schools as a whole, one places in NYC PE, the other places in West Coast VC as well as NYC PE. In terms of prestige, exclusivity, and numbers, Stanford wins.
Which school. What firm prior
@pwc1 I feel like you'll find presence of all M7s in PE. MF? Maybe not as likely but I'm sure a good sum go to MM PE shops. Either way, it's following the same strategy as HBS: network and know your stuff (LBOs etc ).
@EY2: If you can get into the IBD? Yup you have a shot- just network in an MBA (preferably HSW, M7 if you try REALLY hard) and you may get something. For getting into an MBA? People come from a variety of backgrounds and you don't need to be in PE/IB to get in. Just have a good story of why you switched and what you want to don't in the future.
Not sure if this has been asked - what kind of work did you do at MBB? What were things you optimized / kept top of kind as a pre-MBA in terms of broader career development?
I’m a second year pre-MBA Bainie and hoping to hear some advice on how to think about future career development, whether that’s at Bain or leaving for VC.
@Bain1: Just make sure that everything you do is aligned to a story you're going to tell. There are 2 ways to go about this: be specialized or a generalist. I did a variety of projects in my first year out of college, then specialized. I preferred getting specific exp in a sector so I can be more marketable (albiet to a smaller set of companies).
@C2: can't speak to CBS but yes, HBS does have pretty responsive network. I think my response rate was definitely 90%+. Honestly, if you draft a good email/phone call, no one is going to slam the phone on you, more so if you went to the same school.
@KKROP - does Tuck have a presence at KKR? I’ve heard of Tuck having a phenomenal PE network given the size of the program
How is Capstone compensated relative to the deal team?
How did you get into PE post MBA? Especially a MF? It seems that most MFs want prior IB experience.
Also what firm were you with pre MBA
Thanks for doing this. How was your path into PE? Did you do it after pursuing your MBA?
What school did you go to? Did you agonize over admitted schools? Any advice on choosing between schools?
Thanks for doing this. How would you compare the difficulty of moving from consulting to PE pre vs. post-MBA?
Glad to see a MF on here, especially KKR. Thanks for doing this.
-How did you transition to PE post b-school? Are you on the portfolio side?
What are your thoughts across the M7s? Including Columbia which you hate lol
C2: in terms of what? Overall rep? PE opps?
