Just because you have white privilege doesn't necessarily mean you or your ancestors capitalized or took advantage of it.

Also, diversity of skin does create diversity of experience. A poor white person's experience will be wildly different from my experience as a poor PoC.

Is this the new conservative talking point? We're all white but we have "diversity of thought".

This and “systemic racism isn’t real” are what I’m seeing. I guess they didn’t read one of the thousands of books about white privilege/fragility to understand that privilege isn’t magical or earned. It just is and it doesn’t make you a bad person or have anything at all to do with $.

Life experiences shape everyone differently and reality is not only what we see on the surface. Can we all be nice to each other? I don’t care where you stand on an issue but please can you all have some decency for once.

Let’s see. My great grandparents came to North America dirt poor, never having owned a slave or employed a helper. I was born working class and fought hard to educate myself and worked hard to improve my situation. I’m trying hard to set my children up to do the same. Here is the truth: God (or chance, or genetics, take your pick) distributed capabilities unevenly; capabilities significantly affect outcomes; outcomes are therefore not, per se, “fair” or “unfair”, they are just the result of the uneven distribution of capabilities. This is the human condition, and will never go away, as much as we might try to wish it away. The question for us is “What should we do about the resulting uneven outcomes?” Should we do our best to fix it “ex-post” (Eg, equal opportunity, unequal outcomes, then redistribution) or “ex-ante” (Eg, managed outcomes). Both have been tried many times. The first tends to be associated with better overall results and is more consistent with human dignity. As in most things, the Bible is wise here. Matthew 13:12. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is the human condition. It is not “fair”. It is a test. What do we make of this, given that we are told many times over to love one another? Luke 12:48. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. From this wisdom, I take this: I do not have “White Privilege”, I have been given an abundance of gifts from God (or chance or whatever). These gifts will keep on giving, fair or not, whether I want them or not. I am being tested. What shall I do with these gifts? Shall I squander them and realize nothing for myself and for others? Or shall I use them to their fullest, reap their rewards, and love my fellow man by sharing them? I think we’d all be better off if we fought less about the public policy and fought harder within ourselves to make the most of our gifts and do what we can for others. None of us will have much influence on public policy, so taking much time to argue about it is fruitless and a waste of our gifts. Better that we get about our work and our sharing. If we all did a little more of that, we won’t make the “unfairness” of unequal capabilities go away, but we will have done the just thing with what we have been given. I’d rather live in a world with unequal capabilities and all the joys and sorrows that brings than a world where we are all identical and have nothing special to contribute and nothing unique to share. God knows what he’s about. Rage against it if you will. Or accept the challenge, throw your shoulders back, and face the world you are given. See truth, seek truth, speak truth. Don’t waste your gifts. Don’t fritter them away debating. Go to work. But hey, that’s just me. (And most of the wisest moral philosophers through time).

This is some wild mental gymnastics you have going on here.

Great points. I think you are talking about diversity of thought, which some cultures are just getting to after accepting “diversity” in principal. With the current system and education level, I think what you are referring to is a few decades away...

How so? Am I weaving too many things together to follow? I’m kind of pointing out that the public debate we’re kind of not having these days (we’re mostly just shouting past one another) is a small element of the fundamental question. And that’s the same question we have dealt with forever and will deal with forever. I think it would be good if more people had been exposed to these bigger questions. I have this feeling when I read many posts that I’m listening to someone who just woke up for the first time and is blinking in the sunlight, sees the race debate foe the first time and has a top of mind thought. I’m trying to figure out if this is because they are stupid or that they honestly never thought about these issues before. Il guessing it’s the latter and that it’s the fault of their schools and their parents for not educating them properly. I’m afraid we are destined to relearn the basics.

Honestly, yes you are weaving too many things together to reasonably follow in this medium.

I hope most of us can agree on the below as fellow Americans: -Any group wanting to cause harm to people or a specific group of people have no place in our country. -Clearly our country is hurting and needs productive dialogue at the community, state, and national level from both sides. -One side is never right. MSNBC, Fox News, and CNN are also rarely right. -We’re in dire need of empathy and care for one another regardless of political views, race, geographic location, gender, etc.

How do you deal with non-accepting family members? I don’t make it a thing, but I’ve been advised to take off my tie and change into more feminine clothing around them. I am okay with not discussing my personal life, but I don’t feel comfortable changing my dress. So I just don’t keep in contact with those relatives. A therapist told me that I am not secure in my gender identity if I am not willing to take off a tie and show compassion to a family member who would be upset by it? Am I selfish?
