Classroom Funding Strategies

Thoughts about a district micromanaging crowd-funding? As of last year anyone resorting to crowd/grant funding must complete a district form that then goes through an approval process.

All our Crowdfunding must be done through Classmunity. Even if we do Donors Choose it had to be linked through Classmunity so the district can track it. It’s in our board policy

I’ve received nearly 10k over the last few years via Donors Choose. Our district keeps saying they are going to step in, but thankfully they haven’t yet. We wouldn’t even get on field trips most years if it weren’t for DC!

We’re not allowed to crowdfund at all. It was added to board policy two years ago

Lol that’s stupid. If they’re not going to buy it, there’s no reason for them to put bureaucratic red tape around it

Agreed, however, I think districts are starting to do it more and more because when it is publicly recognized that teachers and classrooms aren’t being well funded and resort to reaching out to well-givers, it makes them look bad, despite it being the truth. I have not received any funding for me classroom in almost ten years, where do they think it’s going to come from? My pocket with no reimbursement. So then why shouldn’t the federal govt increase how much teachers can claim on their tax returns to compensate?!

We have to get approval for any crowd funding (and it’s frowned upon). I understand the rationale. I work in a small, Title I district with most families on the lower end of the socioeconomic ladder. It’s a big ask to have teachers crowd funding and the schools doing their own fundraising...

Are donations allowed?

Same with my district. We have a form to fill out ahead of time for approval and then anything we get must stay as district property

Not allowed in my district. Better check before setting one up

I have heard of this. I’ve also heard that when you use Donors Choose the item should stay at your school and not move with you. I’m torn. It’s also why I chose not to use DC. I work in charters and I often move schools because I want more leadership. If the items were to stay at my school I would constantly be having to redo my fundraising. That’s also why DC verifies the transactions. I’m always torn. But I’m also hoping that recent conversations have helped shed light on how teachers fund their rooms

We are not allowed to crowdfund at all. I managed to get 1 project funded through Donors Choose before our district sent out a statement that basically said it made the district look bad and we need to apply for grants.

I haven’t gone the crowdsourcing route yet. There are teachers who have at my school. Some did in their previous districts but had to leave the stuff behind. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I may find what I received that way useful but the next teacher may not, such a waste. Heck, I took my earth and space lab supplies over to next year’s teacher and the look I got. It’s taken me years to build up the supplies for that class so there are labs for each unit. 😡 But, the new teacher doesn’t like to do labs. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Lecture, lecture, lecture! In a science class! Labs are what makes science so awesome! 👏🏼🙌🏼👏🏼

I’m so glad this isn’t in our policy. We are a small Title 1 district, and no one is checking or restricting what we crowdfund at this time
