Thoughts about taking laptop / work phone with me while I’m gone for 3 weeks on PTO/collective disconnect? My planned vacay has been on everyone’s radar for a while, but my supervisors are pressuring me into taking it “just in case” I’m needed. I’m at the associate/staff level So much for being able to disconnect 🥴

I’m kinda ok on the working a bit more beforehand tbh. If it’s me, I’m fine working a bit more before vacation if it means things can smoothly progress when I’m gone and people won’t have to either wait on me, message me, or pick up work for me.

like

Nah fuq that.

When I first started, I felt like I needed to do it. Fast forward five years later and I never do. World goes on

Senior here. Take me to your collective disconnect lol just kidding. Nah how insensitive. If I were your supervisor I will not do it. That is disrespectful and that’s your me time. Don’t take your laptop with you. You won’t get to jail for doing it either. If I’m your supervisor and there’s something urgent that will come up I will call you but if I will give you work I will not condemn you if you will insist that you are on a break. I believe in good leadership by prioritizing employee satisfaction and information security awareness. All hell breaks lose when you lose your laptop while travelling.

like

They can wait. That’s your time off not theirs. Put all of your time in before you travel and rest. They should be able to function without you. So insensitive of them to even come up with such excuse.

I would never require my staff to take their phone or laptop with them. Personally, I always take mine but rarely open it. I do check email periodically and file things away - mainly because I don’t want to come back to 2000 emails. Nowadays, there’s very little I can’t do from my phone.

like

Don’t do it, enjoy your time away.

like

I wouldn’t take it. Just way sure and if they call, ignore first and call back maybe couple hours later and say you were in the woods or whatever. If they say hey I need you to send me this, say oh sorry I’m somewhere with bad internet connecting so I don’t think I can’t until tomorrow or whatever. They will figure out. If they can’t figure out because an associate is out of office, that’s a bigger issue. Personally, I would just say, sure I can take the laptop just in case but please know I’ll be traveling or spending time with family or whatever and won’t be reachable unless it’s an emergency and you call.

like

As a manager I never expect my staffs to look at emails or respond to work thing while they are off. No matter what, I can figure out without bugging them 99.99% of the time.

Travel with it, if you’re in the country. Check you’re work emails on your phone every couple days. You still need to put in your PTO into DTE, so you need at least your phone.

like

Nah we gotta stop telling folks how to spend their PTO. That’s personal time off and no one is obligated to take any phones, laptops, etc with them. OP please unplug.

like

Okay… where is home? Bc Deloitte policy is you can’t take your laptop out of the US without obtaining approval first

I always take mine just in case. I rarely open it but occasionally I’ve needed to share a document.

like

Don’t do it. If the concern is you’ll have something they need, make sure to copy the manager on your emails before you leave and transition any open work. Nothing should be so important that planned time off can’t be treated is such.

like

You’re right, mistakes are made and if expectations aren’t set up front then they’re even less likely to copy me. But their inexperience or lack of upfront coaching doesn’t mean they haven’t earned the right to unplug. We’re all replaceable which means we all can also take time off without a project imploding.

I had a manager insist I work while traveling abroad to get engaged! I knew my boyfriend was going to propose on the trip and wanted it to be special and told my manager so, but he just snapped at me that we all need to do our part. I no longer work there.

I thought it was against policy for phone/laptop to leave the country?

It certainly is!
