Thoughts going out to all the brilliant people at Edelman after today’s seismic shock

The fact is that the more people globally exiting Edelman since the past 3 years the weaker they get. What remained are the most outdated, backstabbing, clueless imposters seemingly trying to steer the sinking ship. That’s the difference between the crisis in 2008 and 2020; people. Richard allowed the best talents to be pushed out of the door yet everyone believes he was holding back his tears? He was thinking about his next extravagantly planned honeymoon being put on hold.

I don’t see a post though. Guessing she deleted it which makes me think it was accurate timing wise. If not, it would have been smarter to keep it up

Enough about the Edelman layoffs already. There are lots of other agencies who have had deeper cuts and are really suffering. Let’s spread our care and concern across the industry.

It’s a family company. You’re not part of it. Look at who survives and tell me favorites and sycophants weren’t spared?

He had tears in his eyes today as did I.

I believe Edelman paid out two weeks for every year worked, up to 20 weeks.

Richard was clearly gutted. He said it was the hardest decision in 23 years and I believe him. He clearly believed he could avoid this moment as, unlike the networks, he is happy to run with no margin and get the senior team to take pay cuts. Turns out that’s just not enough this time.

like

Yet oddly the exact same cuts and behavior as all the networks. Maybe his tolerance for margin pressure is more similar to them than he lets on.

How are people feeling after Richard Edelman’s proclamation in March that he wouldn’t lay off employees? I thought that was a bold move and disappointed it didn’t work out.

likesmarthelpful

Brutal. Sorry, Edelfolk.

Heard they also recently changed their vacation policy - was this in anticipation of layoffs because they didn’t want to have to pay people out?? Genuinely curious (not meant to be malicious at all).

like

Layoffs have happened well before rollover occurs... it’s only been two weeks since the vacation update, so they would still have to pay anyone out with 10 days left. I’m sure payout is a consideration, but financially speaking they need to balance the budgets, regardless.

Also it seems like nobody realizes all will be out of insurance. It upsets me that this is being missed and I will make sure more hear this detail.

like

Yes sure. My heart goes out to those let go - their insurance ends at the end of the month. I’m surprised the company didn’t offer more on that one detail given how much they would like to be seen in a positive way.

Well you can certainly "get" Obamacare, since it's just a law that allows you to apply for private insurance on the state marketplaces. But you already have a right to that when you experience a life change, which includes job loss or loss of employer provided insurance. Maybe they meant medicaid, since you'll have no income, but it kills me that even HR and senior managers don't bother to familiarize themselves with these details that mean A LOT to the people that work for them. Guarantee you all the people hearing about how they "get COBRA" for a year or whatever have no idea that all that means is that by law they are allowed to opt in to keeping their current employer plan if they pay the full cost (previously heavily subsidized by the employer). Putting that here in case some people reading don't know that and find it helpful.

Post about them and discuss then?

So... layoffs at Edelman, then?

Question for you all: Left D to Company A for a 50% raise in TC and slated to start in <1 week. However, just got an offer at Company B for a 100% raise in TC compared to D, or 30% raise in TC compared to company A. Both firms do similar work but B provides a more solid comp package. Job duties would be relatively similar. Is the % jump worth burning the bridge? Would have chosen Company B if the offer came sooner but the % difference in A to B is at my [personal] 30% threshold. TIA!

Hey fam. Appreciate your inputs on this: I used to be a software developer and currently work as a tech risk consultant (CISA, CRISC certified). Have completed a couple of cyber courses but do not have prior cyber experience. Most cyber sec job postings require prior experience in cloud, aws, devops etc. Applied to a couple of roles but no avail. A) Can I start a career in cyber security without prior experience? B) Will CISSP or relevant cyber certifications help?

Your yearly reminder that if you’d bought the DJIA in 1929 you didn’t become profitable in real terms until 1955. It wasn’t just WW2. If you’d bought the DJIA at the beginning of 1966 you lost almost 75% to inflation over two decades and didn’t recover in real terms until 1995. You’d have made nothing between JFK’s death and Clinton’s second term. We are in a particularly weird period of “stonks only go up” but remember those 8% returns over the long run mask generation-defining risks.
