Thoughts in continuing to rent in a small town just outside the city and staying remote vs moving to a bigger city and paying significantly more? Make 100k, paying 1k/mo in rent, maxing 401k, roth IRA, HSA, and extra in brokerage. No plans of buying a house (want to keep renting for flexibility as I invest the rest but obv can change down the line).

Worth it to slow down FIRE path for a bit for longer term career growth and accelerate it in a year or 2? Anyone else go through this thinking?

What would you make by moving? Your expenses may also significantly increase.

like

105-120k, rent would increase by about max 1k depending on city/area. Would prob reduce other expenses as I'll be closer to everything else so reduce need for vehicle use.

Age 25 btw as I think that's relevant. And also after FI not so much RE right now.

Hi there,

I’m an immigrant in the US and learning to navigate all the different retirement and investment accounts.

I have an HSA through work and I’m always seeing people talk about maxing it out which i get but then there are discussions about investments through it? I’m very confused by how this works. I thought this was just an account to assist with health expenses?

Anyone have a resource that explains how this works in dummy terms? Lol

When you refund a signing bonus do you
1- refund ALL of it even taxes Withheld ?
2- refund only the amount that was deposited in your account
3- mix between 1 and 2 refund more than was deposited but less than the whole amount ( taxes should be refunded to me next year)

My contract says 2 and they want to do 3 Help

Started a new gig over a month ago and was very excited to work with my new partner but they haven’t been too welcoming, projects have not been collaborative (just me doing it and emailing it to them), they don’t really reply to my messages about work (started remote) and doesn’t really reply to any creative inspiration that I send to break ice. Not sure why there’s been zero effort on their end? Kind of bummed. Anyone else been there?

Outside of FAANG, what are good large CA-based tech companies that provide good pay, WLB, and culture? DD has great people and WLB, but pay is low and you’re not given the tools and resources to succeed + truly make an impact. Google and Apple are ideal but need backups. Like is Salesforce still good? A company along those lines.

Always been a fan of FIRE and reading about it has definitely helped my finances but I can’t help but wonder if the movement is more about lifestyle change than early retirement.

After you achieve FI,you basically have to maintain the lifestyle that got you there.

What if you want to go on a lavish vacation or buy that flatscreen TV? Are you supposed to do away with material goods entirely? I suppose you could keep working for discretionary $ and live off interest but then you’re not retired.

I'm a Canadian on the TN visa working in the US and planning on maxing my Roth IRA (6k) and will have enough left to max my 401k this year, but am not sure if I should just use a taxable account over 401k due to tax considerations when I move back to Canada (likely 1-2 years from now). Any thoughts here? I don't think I'll have enough RRSP room to move 401k>IRA>RRSP and I would prefer to not have to file US taxes every year in retirement for withdrawls if I left the 401k in the US.
