Thoughts in taking cpa exam just to be able to have partner title instead of principal. In tech consulting and don’t need nor will use cpa but I’m eligible to take it as I have acc undergrad / masters

Why in the world would you unless you have a lot of time on your hands? In big 4, everyone gets the fact that Principal is the same as Partner, so if that’s the only reason you’re thinking about it, don’t see the sense of it. If there is anything the CPA gets you in the context of your job, then maybe, but if you’re in PI, it doesn’t give you any juice career-wise.

Totally agree. Just didn’t know if there was a perception difference between partner or those higher up in leadership

That’s dumb. Principal = partner. Unless you’re going into Finance roles, this is a waste of time. Better to get certs in specific things that will make you better in current position

like

What P1 said - that’s just silly.

like

If u have the time, patience and willingness for it ... why not!

like

Agreed with p1

Not at a Big 4, but I’ve also heard that CPAs who work outside of audit roles will still get Principal titles and be asked (required?) to give up their CPA license so that they cannot sign an audit opinion, thus avoiding any potential misunderstandings.

Got it — might have been situational

Currently not a resident of CA, but will be in September. Accepted an in house job based in CA (will be remote until then). CA bar website says I must be a CA resident to waive into the in house program. I called the office and was told I don’t have to be a CA resident.

Can anyone provide insight on whether I have to be a CA resident to waive into the CA bar as in house counsel? Planning to sit for one of the next 2 administrations of the bar, but would like to have this until then. TIA!
