Bruh it’s too early for this
Who forced you to open the app if it's too early?
I always go with the former. Just feels like better manners.
Pro
It does sound assertive! I switched over to the client side, and hate it when our auditors use the latter.
When this manager is mad at me - he does the latter. Otherwise, he does the former. I think it’s petty and passive aggressive but what do I know lol
Lol this is why I hesitate to switch. I don't want staff to think I'm trying to go alpha dog on them.
Definitely the former! I have PTSD of the second lol back when I was an associate I had a manager who would say “hi [name]” usually and “[name],” if she was upset or wanted to micro-manage. So passive aggressive. Now that I’m manager I made a point to not be so petty and keep things friendly. There are other ways to be assertive in the body of your email.

The struggle is real
Latter sounds like you’re introducing a command imo.
It wouldn't be a command if you start your sentence after with "please" lol
Everyone posting on this is just trying to practice using the former/latter grammar, nerds...
If it's the first time I'm interaction with the person during the day, I use the former. If we've already exchanged various emails or if I'm mad, I'll use the latter. Think about it, if you're interacting with someone in person, you're not going to say "hi" each and every single time you speak to them during the day.
Some people don't use any form of greeting. They just go straight to the sentence. I've had this from people I've never interacted with prior to said email. It's rude.
former but it really doesn’t matter
content of your emails is what counts
I use [name] cuz I’m lazy🤷🏻♀️ especially after multiple emails have gone back and further. clients uses it to. We are all adults, don’t read into email salutations like 7th grade girls
*Manager 2 has left the chat*
Personally, I go with former. I think it sounds friendlier. And it sets the tone for the recipient. If I’m in any sort of negative mood, I’m way more likely to respond if someone starts an email with hi. Plus, the assertiveness comes in the body of the email. You can start an email with hi, and have a quick one line email and be assertive and you can leave the hi off and write a long winded email and be a pushover.
Thanks for the replies everybody! I think I will keep saying Hi based on the consensus feedback. And no I don't say robotically say Hi every email - I usually don't do a salutation on replies.
Realize I probably need to use hi and a name! I am a pioneer driver and forget names a lot!!
