Thoughts on attending DePaul law in Chicago? Is it pretty good for people who have gone?

It’s a great school, but if you’re looking to practice outside of Illinois, I don’t think it’s very reputable. If you decide to stay in Illinois, you’ll be in good shape.

like

Depends on your intended career. What and where do you want to practice? I don’t mean location because previous poster is correct - you need to be in Chicago. Loyola is a better school (at least in reputation) as is Kent - do you have choices?

Well based off my LSAT score I am trying to see where I can apply. I would like to at least make $70k coming out of law school and find a job in IL.

Retake the LSAT.

Lol you have to balance the amount of debt you will have to take on in order to have a chance to make your desired $70k; a general rule of thumb is it’s a bad investment if your starting annual salary is less than the amount of school debt you will have to carry. If the schools are cheap and you will have low living expenses go for it. But if you will be in anything more than $100k in debt I would consider it long and hard if it is worth it. If you are going to be in for over $150 and you think you can make $70k starting it will never be worth it and there are better jobs paying more than that without the stress, debt and long hours.

Graduating at the top 5% maybe 10% of DePaul will give you many options. Below that, not so much. Do you want a consumer neighborhood practice? Big business practice? Talk to lawyers working in fields you want and see what they think.

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?

Realizing why agencies are still struggling to find enough Business Affairs employees. And know several people who this has happened to. One is pay. Salaries have been going up the last year or two. I received a job offer for a PM position with a base of $125K and a 10% bonus, fully remote and ok benefits. The parental leave is pretty bad, just FMLA and STD/LTD so the most I’d get is 60% of my salary for 12 weeks. I’ve cancelled most of my interviews except for one where the pay is $135K, 20% bonus, hybrid schedule, good benefits and 16 weeks fully paid parental leave. I’d like to start my family in a year or two - is it better to take the remote gig or the hybrid role with full paid leave?

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know.
