now this, finally, is an important FB thread!
No. A good espresso machine is like a Ferrari. A dream to use until it breaks down which is inevitable. Get a great countertop and take it to the shop on occasion.
Nice one EY-P1. We’re gonna get on well!!
No. Proper machine better.
I did the appliance garage thing and am happy. That said, friends have the Miele built in and really rave about it. Like their favorite part of a $250k kitchen.
I think it’s just convenient and sleek - - but you’ll have a headache to deal with it at some point.

Here’s the breville in review.
We just did a garage cabinet, with power and a water hookup. It lets us slide whatever machine we're using now (moved to a mocamaster recently, big fan) forward and back on the counter. More or less future proof, as long as we don't need something more than about 20 inches tall.
I wouldn't do built in. I purchased a Delonghi Prima Donna - it's like a car - has to be maintained monthly. Can't imagine having it built in with a milk frother. They are moody machines. Best $2400 I spent during lockdown!
Built in only leads to problems down the road. The machine never outlasts the kitchen.
I just bought the Miele CVA6405 to replace an old broken one from the previous owner of my house. It felt unconscionable spending $4k on the machine but I did it anyways, and I have to say I’m really happy I did it. From a financial point of view, it’s an atrocious decision, but I’m a huge coffee lover and it makes me happy every time I hit that espresso button. So, for me it’s totally worth it. I also bought Miele’s 5-year warranty since I fully expect it to break.
I have the fancy Miele built in. zero reliability issues. maintenance is easy. BUT, milk foamer stinks, so we never use it.
It’s a bit extreme and not built in…., but it’s like a piece of art, built like a tank and makes amazing coffee. Best lockdown purchase ever.
We did our kitchen and went almost all Miele. I wanted the sleek built in one. But between the costs and reviews and maint issues, it just didn’t make sense. Have a fancy chrome one in a little niche now that is great.
I have a Jura capresso counter machine that I love. I’m not sure I would build in personally.
I got a La Pavoni for when I want to remind myself how miserable I am at making manual espresso (but it looks super cool) and a Moccamaster for every day caffeine jolts. Happy with both, but in retrospect, should’ve bought an espresso machine more in keeping with my skill level and desired learning curve… :)

Don’t know about prone to breaking but it’s probably not the best machine overall and can’t be easily upgraded
Helpful - thanks all!

I stayed in a hotel once that had a faucet (like literally a pipe coming out of the wall) that said “coffee” and disbursed a brown liquid when turned.
I’m picturing something like that.

Omg.I would love one. That would seriously be amazing.
What you describe with the built in is not an espresso machine but a bean-to-cup. The two are very different.
If you are happy with the coffee from a bean to cup like Jura, get the built-in which looks best/sleekest. They will all taste quite similar.
If you are looking for true espresso (and espresso drinks like latte, cappuccino, flat white) get a real standalone portal filter.
