Nothing wrong with marketing yourself! You could also do Data Scientist | Internal Title
Assistant (to the) Data Scientist? 😋
Bowl Leader
If the internal title doesn't exist in the market, have at it. There's also a difference between your headline and title on there, they don't have to match. Headline can be descriptive, title is more resume-ish.
A trick for your resume if you have a common non-descriptive title is to put both the real and de facto ones. Just make clear that one is only disambiguating and not given. Parentheses work well. So if you were a generic "Consultant", you could write "Consultant (Data Scientist)" and be ok by most people.
Thanks everyone! Makes me feel better about my options
I agree with DS 1, use parenthesis or something. My first job title out of undergrad was Economist which doesn't even make sense for someone with a bachelor's degree. I put my real title and then a more descriptive on in parenthesis. You have to have the real title in case they call your company and ask about you.
