Thoughts on EU ruling on Uber being a taxi firm > US impact? Sounds legit. Don't care much for their corporate culture, but care less for the high prices and poor service of regulated taxi firms

Uber’s service has taken a dive recently from my experience. Economics is taking over. The reality is that they have no enduring competitive advantage. E-hailing is a great invention, but it’s not proprietary.

Agree with OW. Uber was just first-mover in the app-hailing taxi space. Landing in a US city without Uber feels third world, the impact in Europe less-so because of superior public transport Infrastructure. Uber works because it's subsidized by VC to offer dirt cheap prices (I live in a city where I can pay $3.49 for a pool anywhere in the city). The next innovation - unfortunately for taxi drivers - is when AV takes the human out of the cost model and makes those prices sustainable.

like

Ride hailing is a two sided scale driven market... so there’s a big advantage to scale, and not easy to disrupt once big players are in place. I hate cabs. Uber and Lyft are incredibly superior experiences on every criteria, excepting if you’re in a place completely saturated with cabs and hailing them is faster than Uber/Lyft (only true in Manhattan outside peak times, a few small sections of Chicago and SF, and non-busy airports)

like

Read a few articles today. Somehow, consumer opinions or preferences were largely omitted. So, business as usual for EU. As a European now living in the US and traveling globally, landing in a country without Uber/Lyft is like being in the third world.

like

No impact on the US, EU continues to plumet into third world abyss

M1, that’s not true at all. There is minimal cost for me to check prices at Uber and Lyft and minimal cost for drivers to offer rides on both networks. So there are minimal network effects. I agree having to check prices or offer rides across >3 apps isn’t practical. But you don’t need many competitors. More fundamentally, Uber hasn’t radically transformed the major costs of providing taxi service. So there’s no way to believe it will be able to permanently lower prices

If you’re interested in some of these roles, I would be more than happy to refer you (to up to 3 of them) 🙂 I’ve had a great experience working in Product Operations. The org really values people with consulting backgrounds. DM me with your background and email and I’d be happy to connect with you there.
