I’ve seen freelance CDs downgrade their LinkedIn title to Art Director or Copywriter. There’s more freelance work out there for those roles. Freelance for CDs is mostly for pitches or high-level platform ideation. Usually a couple weeks then you’re done. If you want steady work, resist the urge.
As in changing your title on LinkedIn or falsifying past role titles?
You shouldn't sell yourself short, I'd change it to Founder/Chief Creative Officer at Freelance
I would say unless you’ve had that title elsewhere or have the book to back it up it might be easy to see you just promoted yourself. That said, i did just that as a junior to mid writer.
There’s nothing particularly wrong or unethical about it. But it’s not fooling anyone. Recruiters and CCOs/ECDs can blatantly see from your LinkedIn that you promoted yourself.
Think about it this way: when you freelance, you're running your own business. So, of course, you should be the Creative Director of your business. I don't see it as a promotion/demotion/any motion. It's a matter of business. Besides, if you don't think you're worthy of being a Creative Director, don't expect anyone else to. Go for it.
I did it. It worked.
Now I’m back FT as a CD, and guess what... I’m good at it.
Titles are a load of crap. just be a good Human and understand a CD is NOT just a super senior creative title and you’re asking for the responsibility to manage and nurture other creative talent when you assume that role. Your job is no longer about your success, it’s about theirs. Is that something you’re ready for?
It's not fooling anyone. Be ready to answer questions about past roles. It's obvious when someone gave themselves a promotion vs actually having held the title.
