I live in Columbia Heights/Petworth and was briefly looking at H Street before choosing here. Keep in mind that H St is a super cool area but is in a bit of a public transit dead spot. It has the streetcar but that’s not as reliable as DC Metrorail. That ending up being a decent factor for us as having easy metro access was important (have a car but DC isn’t the best city to rely on a car for all transit)
H Street is still developing, you’re far away from everything. Don’t live there. Look at Shaw, Navy Yard, Cap Hill
Moved to H street this past summer and love it! Saying that I’ve been in DC for 12 years so have been to a bunch of the neighborhoods. Columbia Heights is closer to 14/U, Shaw, and other areas to go out while H street is closer to cap hill/eastern market so you’ll have to go a little bit further to go out.
Better apartments on H where we have about 3-4 all new 1-2 year old buildings
No regrets about choosing this area though. 11th Street is awesome (Room 11, Bad Saint, Red Rocks, El Chucho, Meridian Pint, etc.), Petworth has a lot of cool local places (Himitsu, Timber, Homestead, Reading Room, etc.) and 14th St balances good chains/junk food (Chick Fil A, Cava, &Pizza, Pollo Campero, etc.) with more local options (Thip Khao, Bombay Street Food, Letena, Little Coco’s, etc.). Plus we have a Giant and a Safeway for easy grocery shopping, Target, Old Navy, Bed Bath and Beyond, etc. for other shopping and U St is just one or two metro stops away.
CH suuuucks.
Great input
Columbia heights!
I have literally lived in both so you might be my spirit animal. Cohi is very conveniently located to big box stores, fast food and nicer places. Also only Target in dc and the green/yellow line. H is amazing restaurants and going out scene (I miss it). But not great for metro. Additionally awesome proximity to union market, Capitol Hill, Eastern Market and Navy Yard.
If you’re work is in VA the drive daily is easier going east to west to VA than north to south in cohi.
I’d say by the two CoHi and not just bc I live here. As others have said HbSt is a bit of a transit island. You’re really close to U St AdMo Logan and easy commute to downtown here. There are some new buildings opening and it seems like a decent amount of nee young people are moving in or to Petworth.
I appreciate the insight. I’ll let you all sort out the naming conventions.
H St is cool, but like everyone else has said, it’s a pain in the ass to get to/from. I’d go with Columbia Heights.
