Thoughts on Human Capital / People practices being paid less because they are have a higher proportion of women? Found out that a colleague in Strat is making more and wondering if it’s widespread?

I’m in human capital - here at Deloitte, HC is paid the same as Strategy & Operations, and Technology is paid less for the most part. The only exception is Monitor Deloitte which has higher pay as a function of the market. So in my experience - the pay differential is based on the market rates for “pure strategy” vs the more operational / transformation work done in HC / the rest of S&O. However, I do think there are still differences in how the firm treats men vs women - the proportion of female vs male leaders is still heavily skewed towards men, even in some groups in HC

^ it’s not that simple :/ I’ve seen plenty of clients that had HR teams with 80% females, and yet all the senior HR positions were male

D1 is correct about Strat/HC and tech. Other firms may pay Strat higher, which is unbelievable to me. The HC projects I've worked on generate much more money due to multi-year projects and then extended support afterwards.

Our current CEO, head of Consulting and head of HC in the US are all women. Still many men but that's nice to see. I'm male if that matters to anyone and have been in HR/HRIS my entire career.

Thank you OP! Scanned the academic summary and takeaway was women were offered higher pay and didn’t take it (selectivity - offered job comp vs. observed job comp.) most of the bias is at high incomes (which aligns with anecdotal data), and increasing gender labor force participation gap (I.e. less Men/more Women gap) are the explanatory variables.

Bottom line: research has narrow applications and is not a general trend. Also, if you are concerned about 1 data point (guy making more money than you) easy to make emotional conclusion and then find proof points to back it up. Impact?

like

Classic case of correlation vs causation. More females are in the HR sector. HR work pays less.

@D1 - Seeing the same thing. Lots of men in leadership, predominantly women at other levels.

In GPS, HC has lowest comp bands, tech has the highest.
