Thoughts on lateraling from US tier 2 firm to MBB in Asia?

@D1: At least from what I've seen (been associated with the region for 3+ years now), most lateral hires unfortunately come from either industry (lots of ex-P&G folks, banks, or boutiques -- think Roland Berger, Booz and Monitor -- pre-acquisition). This is just my guess, but I think it might be because the Big 4 consulting brand isn't the strongest in Southeast Asia (unlike the US). Accenture does fairly well, but I know people who took internal consulting roles in local companies over Big 4 Advisory/Consulting offers.

like

Largely agree with OW1. In my experience client problems are equally critical in the US, but more broad and nebulous in Southeast Asia (e.g., we're entering a market... tell us what products, pricing, positioning, distribution strategy, etc.) or help us enter an entirely new category. Clients in Southeast Asia tend to look at consulting like a "brain trust" and can be more demanding but more involved in the solutioning process (usually in a very productive way -- e.g., making it very clear to their VPs and Directors that they need to work closely with us on an everyday basis). Clients also tend to be more no-nonsense and care less about positioning and pretty slides, and generally tend to be in get-shit-done mode. It's an exciting part of the world and the pace of work is faster for both consultants and clients, which leads to longer hours, but the time is spent doing more interesting stuff.

Do you like not having free time?

like

Haven't worked with SIN. Tokyo and Seoul offices have very long hours. Seoul probably the worst globally.

like

I've worked a ton with BCG in Singapore. The hours are certainly longer than the US, but the work is extremely interesting (lots of consumer and TMT), people are awesome, and the partner group is very supportive. Mon-Thu can be tough, but weekends are almost always fully protected. I'm actually considering transferring there for good myself (currently at a major US office)

like

BCG1 is Asia that bad? I'm in the process of interviewing with BCG in Singapore.

like

I think firms in Asia generally have an understaffed model.

like

@McK 1: It really comes down to what you value. Although Korea/Japan are a different level of hell. Personal opinion: I interned at McK in Asia at some point, and I do think BCG leadership in SEA is more concerned with the well being of junior staff, and McK in Asia tends to be quite hierarchical. Not trying to knock McK -- it's a great firm where I still have mentors and where I decided I wanted to do consulting for good, but just pointing out a difference I noticed (and my personal preference for the BCG culture)

like

How is Bain in Singapore? Or McK?

like

Exactly -- I've worked in 10+ markets, and the local brand/scale/quality of the local Big 4 consulting "chapters" varies widely

like

Our offices do very well. Agree with OW1 on offices choice. Don't know much about Bain China offices other than that they're quickly expanding further

like

I work at OW singapore, I can answer any questions about Singapore/Asia Pacific you have

like

How are the clients like compared to the US of you have done both?

like

What industries and types of work are the more common ones?

like

Projects are more interesting compared to US, coz clients have larger and more important problems to be solved. Clients tend to be more demanding and want more bang for their buck.

like

Bcg2-- the hierarchy is indeed what most diagnose as the issue in Asian offices. Cliche story is team is scared of partners and in turn turns out fully baked decks to impress leadership, who in turn throw it out and make them redo it. Can only hope it's an exaggeration, but directionally probably speaks about the culture..

like

^ wrong. OP just said Asia, didn't specify.

like

Would like to know the perspective too

@BCG2 any chance of big 4 applying to the singapore office?

BTW they are rapidly growing the Technology Advantage practice, and I have seen some ex-Accenture folks hired in the last year or so, so if you're tech and apply for TA, perhaps it'll help your odds

Having grown up in the lower middle class and not with much money family wise, I always thought one day when I made six figures I would have tons of money coming in, but lately I am discouraged with my “take home pay”. Combined my wife and I make about $275k, we max both our 401k accounts out and after all taxes, and other deductions we take home roughly $150k. Don’t get me wrong this is a great amount. I just always dreamed my take home would be more. Anyone else feel this way? We lose over 40%

I am struggling with the fact that I have 13 years of HR experience in one capacity or another, along with a bachelors degree and my PHR designation yet companies say “I’m not qualified or they ghost me when I apply for HR openings. I am experienced in all aspects of HR. How are people with little to no experience coming right out of college obtaining higher level roles than I have currently? Husband Relies on Me for Lunch - I know this is dumb, but before the pandemic, my husband ate lunch at the office and I was generally in charge of dinner. I’m busy during the day, and we have different lunch preference schedules. He does not get how annoying it is to me to have to be in charge of his lunch. Am I in the wrong?
