Thoughts on leaving big law position 2 years out of law school, being paid well below cravath scale, for a federal clerkship?

To the extent this is a question of personal finances, I defer to you. In all other aspects, it sounds like a great idea. In fact, one of my colleagues (a 2nd year biglaw litigator) is doing exactly this.

Frankly it depends on the clerkship and what you want to do post-clerkship. Circuit? District? If district, which? And if district is the judge active or senior? Generally speaking clerkships are great experiences and could be a great way to get in the USAA’s office now that you have a few years’ experience. You can also go back to BigLaw (if you want that) with a nice bonus to boot. Maybe even switch firms to one that pays better. Even if you don’t want any of that and you enjoy the work, they can be incredibly rewarding. I did two of them and I enjoyed both. Frankly I don’t know why I did them (I already the job I wanted locked in) but looking back I’m glad I did.

Certainly sounds like more fun.

I know someone who did almost exactly what you are considering. Went back to the same firm after clerking and made partner within the same time frame that he would have if he had not left to clerk.

Could be great. Small warning: if you are making the move in part for better work-life balance, you need to confirm with past clerks that this assumption is correct for your specific judge before committing.

Should I ask for a raise? My 6-month review is next week and I’m thinking about asking for a raise. I’ve never asked for one before and normally would never think of asking for one until at least 12 months but in the last couple of months my role and responsibilities have enhanced significantly. I don’t have much experience as this is my first job in advertising (comms background) and I don’t want to come off as naive or ignorant! Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you!

New one here wanting to start taking control of my finances. Cleared $100K in student loans by 28. Got a new role with annual salary of $145K now. Next year I’ll be getting married and we’ll be pulling jointly over 260K +. Restricting my Roth contribution. I currently have a 401K (48K balance) and a brokerage (26K balance). I just opened up a Roth although I think this year would be the only year I can contribute 6K into it. Where else should I spread my money long term?

Any thoughts on negotiating more vacation time with a new company? Manager leaving Accenture for a specialty firm in Public Sector. Two firms competing for me have offers on the table. The one I like told me they just don't negotiate vacation and everyone from the C-suite down gets three weeks. Losing two weeks a year of vacation sounds awful! Any thought on negotiating? I have a pretty strong position right now. I'm open to options. Though they kind of already nixed the idea of unpaid PTO.

I went T2>MBB and am thinking of going back to T2 because I prefer to aim for partner (MBB is not sustainable for me) rather than taking industry exit... Is this a dumb move? I’ll be dropping pay slightly but with better working hours one step below partner vs industry at ‘head of’ level...

Hi, could anyone please share any insights on case prep for Consultant role at EY-Parthenon London office?

Hi all! So I made the switch to industry 8 weeks ago and took on a completely new role (I’ve got about 6.5 YOE.)I love the org and my new supervisor, however I got paired with a colleague who has made it clear she doesn’t enjoy working with me and has serious issues with my working style. She’s a very senior and experienced person so feels bad that she thinks so negatively of me already. I want to improve, but it will take some time as I’m still relatively new. (Cont)
