If you work well with them and like them, why not try to bring them with you? But at the end of the day you don’t owe anyone anything. If there’s only one role open and you want to work there, go for it. No point in holding yourself back because you’re afraid of hurting someone’s feelings.
I took a new job without my partner a couple months ago. It was a tough decision. I really pushed for them, but ultimately they weren't looking for an AD.
I think there's no wrong way to handle this. You can link up for life or bounce around. Or some combo of either. But if you are going to take a job without them, I'd say honesty is your friend. Keep them in the loop. Help with the transition on your way out. And if you enjoyed working with them, leave the door open for future work together. I've seen a few partners meet back up again!
Depends on the relationship and how successful you are as a team. My partner and I are besties and are successful together so we always look to jump together.
My creative partner and I were laid off together and we agreed we would look for gigs independently and as a team. And no hard feelings if one of us got hired first (which happened). It's sad and we miss each other. But we did what we had to do.
