Thoughts on LinkedIn? How do you use it? What has it done for you? I’ve never had a LinkedIn profile before as I’m happily employed but was wondering aside from job search what the app is used for? TIA

Job search is about the only useful thing for LinkedIn. Otherwise, it’s just a lot of self promotion.

It’s pretty much a professional Facebook. 95% of the people you are connected to, you don’t really talk to. As one poster mentioned there is a lot of self-promotion, and I feel it is slowly becoming more of a news site than an extended professional network. I have about 200 connections, but I would say 15 of those connections make 90% of the posts on my feed. With that said, it still is not terrible for job hunting, particularly the “easy apply” jobs, which automatically fill out your application. As another poster mentioned, a lot of the recruiters are either brainless or don’t seem to be vaguely familiar with the legal industry, so you can end up in an interview you are unqualified for or just in the wrong sub set. LinkedIn was for awhile a good place to find academic papers as well since people used to have copies of what they got published on their profile, but I really have not seen as many papers floating around. I’m not sure if that is by design or if the people I know are just not publishing as much.

It has done absolutely nothing for me, except I get pitched to by marketers, scammers, and recruiters who obviously have not read my profile. The only plus is, it helps me keep in touch with professional contacts that I like and want to keep in touch with.

Job search. I got my last two jobs via recruiters that reached out to me on LinkedIn.

I use it for networking but like A2 said prepare for being bombarded with recruiters and scammers. If you don't need it, don't get it.

It’s good to have a LinkedIn profile even if you are happily employed. That way it is there if you need it. You just never know what a connection you’ve had for years might yield.

How (& who) do you ask about promotion and raises at a firm when you're new to the firm but not to the profession? Mid size boutique so there is no set path. I have lots of government experience, but I'm new to firm life. Joined my firm during WFH and didn't get a full orientation as to advancement opportunities in the firm. I think I want to stay, and need to know more to set career goals, but until my first annual eval (which isn't til August) I'm not sure how to start that conversation.
