I have worked for a firm for 10 years. Waited for an AVP (through a promotion) 5 years in (even though doing the work since being hired). I see staff getting VP. And SVP all around me. Manager (in my review) stated he didn’t give it much thought when I asked if I’d be considered for a VP ever. Meanwhile, I report directly to him and work independently. Some work I do there are other VPs who have worked on same. What does it take to get a VP, etc? Years of service?

I’m onboarding at a new consulting firm (big4). I was told in a big onboarding meeting with 300+ people in all kinds of diff roles at the firm that the ideal utilization rate is 80% billable. How long did it take you to get to 80% billable? And are there ever any consulting roles where you can consistently be less than 80% billable and still get promoted, get rated well, etc eg if your role just naturally involves a lot of admin work like proposal writing?
