Check on your maternity leave policies. Do you have to work there for x amount of time after leave in order for pay not to get clawed back? But they will be nice to you if you’re going in house to a client/potential client. You have to do what’s best for you. Firms understand that associates leave. You are of course valuable to the firm, but you could easily wind up even more valuable as a client/referral source. It’s all part of the biz. If you were going to a competitor firm, they’d be more salty about it, but even that firms understand.

SA1, more theoretical question on my part, I think the only thing I’ve heard of is like maternity leave benefits kick in only after you’ve been at the firm for x amount of time, e.g., one year, so I wasn’t sure if there might be something similar on the backend.

Hmm. Would your big law firm or your partners act against their interests just to avoid making you upset? No.

I’d think they’d be happy to be honest - firms always seem to like placing people at clients. And arguably this is the best time to do it bc they don’t even need to worry about restaffing your matters, etc. But regardless, you should do what’s best for you! And congrats!

I think it does. It’s not as much of a lifestyle position as I would want, but the role and industry are very exciting to me.

Thanks for the insights, all. I’m seeing comments about my firm, and while it’s true that it has a reputation for being a tough place, my particular practice group is great and I really like my supervising partners. They’ve been good to me and I don’t want to sever those relationships.

I gave my 2 week notice at the end of paternity leave and it was the greatest feeling ever.
