From NYC
I moved to Dallas from Chicago. To me the opportunities (career wise) seemed more than Houston. Also important was staying close to religion and According to AbdelRahman Murphy, a Chicago-born, Irving-based Islamic teacher and Muslim community leader, other U.S.-based Muslims now refer to Dallas as the "Medina of America".
Rising Star
Where are you moving from? Thats an important consideration
Considering the same move. Coming out of Midwest.
Cost of living wise Chicago was a bit higher than Dallas. I believe Houston is even cheaper.
Pro
Both are relatively comparable in size of Muslim communities & COL. I’d look at future opportunities within your industry and see if one has more than the other. Houston seems to have a lot of Oil & Gas industry. I’m not sure about Dallas.
I’d recommend you reach out to some of the mosques, check them out on Facebook & see if there is a community that stands out to you where you’d want to belong. From my experience, I found more diversity in Houston.
Good luck!
OP, both cities have a vibrant Muslim community. My suggestion if you’re South Asian, choose Dallas. If Middle Eastern, choose Houston.
In my experience Dallas is a lot more in your face American pride and less overall diversity in comparison to Houston. Houston doesn’t have as much as that southern pride and entitlement as dallas in my totally personal opinion. Plus coming from nyc you’ll find dallas very spaced apart and odd. I am from Chicago and found that to be true.
From personal acquaintances i know living In the suburbs of Dallas, You’re running around to all four corners of the town to accomplish your weekend chores. Whereas in Chicago and NYC suburbs you go down a major street for 2-3 miles and you have everything you need. That might a culture shock to you or you might love it , who knows.
I would suggest you witness it yourself and make your own personal judgements since it’s a big decision. This was my personal, non factual opinion after visiting both cities and having family/friends living in the area.
