Ask for $160! You are a lawyer, definitely negotiate (assuming it’s not a lockstep firm). They are not going to rescind your offer or think less of you for advocating for yourself. Ask for $160, land between $150-$155. Why leave money on the table?
That is why I thought that maybe $5k is too SMALL of an ask, it looks bad bc it’s not actually a significant amount of money so it looks like asking just for the sake of it. I think if OP thinks they have skills enough to justify higher, the ask needs to be $10-15k higher with justification (ie its market, etc.) Now if this is OP’s first job out of law school...then they should not ask for more.
If someone rescinds an offer because I negotiated my salary, that looks bad on them. It’s completely normal to negotiate salary and if they don’t want to negotiate they can just respond with “sorry $145k (or whatever) is as high as we can go”
If a hiring partner responds with “never mind!!” I think I dodged a bullet 😂😂😂
That’s also true.
Do you like the firm? Is asking for more worth the possibility of losing the opportunity?
$5000 is a take home of a couple hundred, I’m not rich or anything, but $200 isn’t enough for me to risk missing out on something great. Unless it is something that’ll help you out, idk your life circumstances.
My thoughts too!
I would ask for 20-25 more. They will probably meet you halfway. Better to get as much as you can but also to show you are a tough negotiator. Will help with future negotiations when you are asking for a raise. My old firm was the worst about raises and always acted like they were doing me a favor and that I was being an a$&hole for asking for more money.if you don’t set a precedent now, they make take it as a sign they can screw you in the future. Just a thought.
Good thoughts to consider for sure!
Absolutely do not ask for $5K. They will think you’re nickel and diming them. Ask for $165K and in your counter, succinctly set forth why you are worth the extra $20K. You’ll probably get a $155K offer.
Also what year are you?
Solid answer, thanks!!
One of my buds recently got an offer for $160. They tried to sell it as in there is a lot of room to grow and they took him out to lunch/beers. He was at $130 at the time. And he countered at $180. They said they’ll be going in a different direction. I’m also not sure how tactfully he countered. Could’ve been a dick about it lol
I think they expect or aren’t offended if you to negotiate but aren’t like put off if you don’t
