@P1, your Razorfish description is spot-on, but I disagree with your assessment about Sapient.

Long before consulting firms went "digital" and got into the digital marketing game, we bought Nitro group and built the kind of advertising meets consulting practices you now see from Accenture, the big 4 and MBB.

In addition to doing well during the tech bubble, we survived the bubble bursting , shifted to a global delivery model fairly quickly, and stayed independent and grew big. Years before Deloitte bought Doblin and started harping about human centered design, we bought e-Lab in the 90s and were one of the largest employers of corporate anthropologists at the time.

Were we the only firm that made these investments? Were we 100% successful in everything we did? No, but we adapted and grew a respectable business in both consulting and digital work.

If that's our dork rep, alongside Publicis holiday videos, I'll gladly put that against other firms.

like

Don’t even think (assuming you work for big 4). It’s like switching your loyalty from Delta to Spirit. Or like holidaying in Omaha vs Hawaii. However if you want to get some exposure to cruel politics and eventually kickoff your career in politics, it may be a good place to start.

like

Same as above. I'd like to also advise you to stay away from firms owned by Publicis if at all possible. Trash culture. Money over everything, way worse than where you're coming from. If they could, they'd tattoo a barcode on the neck of each art director they hire and crush.

Agree with IBM. I used to be in that industry. Razorfish is glorified digital agency. Good digital marketing and creative campaigns. Good digital strategy. Alright in large platform implementations and ecommerce. But that’s pretty much what they’re known for. Sapient consulting, from what I hear, has a good rep in Fed consulting. The two have had issues integrating, but things seem to be getting better

like

OK @IBM, fair enough, but the digital marketing (and e-commerce) piece is focused from the Razorfish side, but the original Sapient side of things was much more business and technology consulting, with deep digital marketing and e-commerce as well. That will continue to be how/where the company grows, much like other comparable firms (IBM iX/GBS, Fjord/Accenture, Deloitte Digital type work)

The merger has completely muddled how we positioned ourselves, but we're finally coming out of that mess.

So yes, Razorfish was more agency, and Sapient was more of a hybrid consulting firm meets digital agency.

Having spent some time with Sapient pre and during the early razorfish days, I think the spirit vs delta or holiday inn vs jw Marriott is quite accurate. My experience is that politics are worse, funding is a challenge, promotion is difficult, and the lack of both the depth and breadth of offerings and skills of one of the big players. That said, they have some interesting relationships and pockets of excellence. It’s not a terrible place to work, but it’s not like playing in the big leagues.

For clarity: i was there for 5+ years and left about a year ago

@A3 - Publicis. Not public. It's a holding company.

They do great work in the digital marketing space but that’s pretty much it

Wondering if anyone knows specifics about product management structure and culture within the company? General promotion trend and salary estimates?

@OP, what role/office are you looking at?

What do you mean by promotion trend?

Also @IBM is incorrect about our core business strengths but whatever.

Roger that Thanks for the great explanation, SC1!

@SP1 looking at a product management role so not within consulting actually. And with the promotion trend I’ve heard it’s hard to get promoted so wondering if there’s a general amount of time to promote for their product management practice

P1, seems like a pretty broad generalization about public companies. Some of my friends at the Big Four tell me their practices are much closer to your description than my practice at ACN, though here everything does indeed vary quite a bit by practice...

@OP, the product management practice is an extension of our consulting practice into a more formalized practice and service offering for clients. We've done it for years under different names, but it's essentially the same thing.

Just know that it'll be product management meets consulting at times, and more "pure" product management at other clients. Your background would probably be a good fit either way.

As for promotions, difficulty depends on what career stage you come in. But I don't think it's drastically different from any other firm. There's no promotion moratorium or anything like that in the 5 years I've been here.

@SP1 thank you so much! Your info was very helpful :)
