Thoughts on sending/receiving handwritten markups to opposing counsel? Especially when borderline illegible? Every time I receive one of these I can’t help but think the attorney is lazy and rude. My client should not have to pay for me to decipher your writing.

Accept it the first time but say please send all comments in the word doc going forward.

This is exactly what I do in the limited instances it happens. One time the client told me to outright reject the handwritten comments, which I had no problem doing.

What I find rude is OC sending “locked” Word files or .pdf files.

“Sorry, we couldn’t read most of your proposed changes so in the interests of reviewing your fully baked draft, we’ll await your turn of the docs in clean and redlined form. Thanks!”

It’s a power play. OC or even people within your own firm who do this want to make it difficult for you. What I do is simply don’t include random comments—especially ones I don’t like—then let the other side point it out.

I think handwritten comments are so disrespectful, doubly so if it’s coming from another firm. Either mark it up electronically or have your assistant handle it - associates are not your secretaries.

Send a polite note asking that going forward, they send you a Word document with “track changes” turned on. I would be very specific. Is it possible you’re dealing with a dinosaur that isn’t used to using Word?

Doesn't that just make it more time consuming for them? Assuming they don't have a word version of their handwritten comments (which would be insane) do they go line by line to make sure you incorporated all their handwritten changes?

Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

Recently started my own firm and interested in others thoughts. Are there resources out there for practical advice or is it only something that comes with experience? For example, I can take let's say a 601A client and use the resources available to me to learn how to do it. But if a client asks me is it better to marry my fiance in her home country, bring her here on a K-1 or have her visit on a B-2, that's not learned from a book or webinar. How does one learn how to evaluate new cases?

I've heard you shouldn't quit because of another employee. Two times in my career managers have tried to get me fired to cover up their own incompetence or mistakes. I played it well and they ended up being fired. They were very abusive to staff.

Now I'm dealing with a frankly insane coworker and I really don't feel like waiting it out or playing some game. It's exhausting.

Has anybody else experienced a time when a female coworker that you looked up to put you down? I’ll start: I stumbled into an automation project that was going to help close the labor gap & decrease machine downtime. I had 2 more classes left of my degree, but I was leading meetings and meeting with possible vendors. As soon as school started, she switched the meeting times to when she knew I’d be in class and hijacked my entire project. I wish it ended differently.

For the junior associates out there, I’m a 2020 call and am convinced that I’m taking a lot of time while working on deals. I’m also not really sure how my efficiency compares to other associates as I’m the only junior in the group. The junior partner I work with primarily always tells me to rack up my hours but I’m also afraid of looking inefficient with the more senior partners. Does anyone ever write down their own time? Or is ashamed of how long it takes to draft say a direction to pay?
