Thoughts on taking a self-claimed mental health day after billing crazy hours for the past 2 months?

You will never regret taking a mental health day, but you will regret not taking it. Your mental health is far more important than anything, give it the priority it needs. Speaking from personal experience, I regretted not taking mental health days when I desperately needed it, and it only led to burn out. The key to avoiding burn out is to give yourself the mental and physical breaks you need on a consistent basis. Good luck!

I am honestly amazed. Yeah, I know I will be lambasted by tons of associates, but seriously, you all are just regularly taking “mental health days” in which you are gone? I don’t mean vacation time, sick days, or, if really getting destroyed, maybe taking a day to sleep and recover, but “regularly” taking a workday and just being totally off the map because you have been busy? Never heard of it. The comments here suggest everyone does this, but I have never heard of anyone anywhere doing it, and my firm is decent at WLB.

You never hearing about it is probably the point

I wouldn’t even let anyone know. I’d just get a popsicle and aimlessly wander around the park thinking about why I didn’t go to medical school like my parents told me to, in a state of detachment from my physical being. Also, set your Teams to Available on your phone.

Same, except I’m asking myself why I let my parents push me toward law when I wanted to go to med school.

“Self-claimed”? Who the fuck else should get to decide if you need a mental health day.

I take these regularly

Take the time for sure! Make sure you use it wisely, and not worrying about whether you should have taken it! 😃

Do this more often once every two months if you are billing crazy hours.

Ah, I see you distinguished between litigation and corporate. Yes, I am in litigation. I have no idea how corporate works.

The only thing you should do is let your team know ahead of time you’re going to be unavailable (no need to go into why) so that no one is actually expecting you to respond ASAP or looking for you. Then put an out of office on day of so that the people who conveniently forgot you’re going to be unavailable have a nice little reminder.

like

Absolutely agreed. No explanation needed other than I’ll be out of the office on X date.

Don’t think twice, take it!

You can take a day off for whatever you want. Doesn’t have to be framed as a “mental health day.” If you’re good on your hours and you don’t have any commitments that day do whatever you want. If your firm has a problem with that then they’ve convinced their associates to feel guilty about normal things like time off you’ve earned. Or maybe the guilt is merely self-imposed and nobody would even care at all.

Take the day! You are a human before you are an equity-partner’s-5th-house-generating machine. I have no time for management who thinks we are workers before we are humans and no one should have time for trolls who assume you’re not billing enough by just asking this question. Don’t be blind to your value in this market. I view safeguarding my time as my unilateral “negotiation.” I know I will never be fired for it in a market like this, especially given my specialty. If a partner wants to get cute about it in a way I find unreasonable, I will gladly lateral with a signing bonus.

Totally fine

Just do it

Do it.

Take it life is too short

Take it 100%

I’m having a hard time staying motivated lately. Really apathetic about everything. Feels like I’m falling into a bad depressive slump. I’m getting more and more behind on work because I just can’t sustain focus for longer than a couple hours at a time. There’s no one to shift my workload to, and as much as the legal industry talks about lawyer mental health, it’s still a taboo topic. I know it’s the pandemic causing this downswing, but I don’t know how to shake myself out of this rut.

Has anyone quit their job and travelled the world for a long period of time? Any things I should think about (stuff like travel health insurance or other tips)? Considering doing it 6 months before I do grad school full-time in a few years so saving up a bunch before then. Figure this would be the best time in my life to do it since it won't impact my career (hiring managers won't care if there's a resume gap before grad school) and before I have a family.
