Auditing is not preparing. Go try to find a job in reporting and tell them you receive fully prepared reports to review and that is just as valuable as preparing them and watch them laugh in your face. Unfortunately, there is a perception in the big 4 that we actually have skills but we don't. We know how to audit but nothing else. Practically worthless experience outside of public accounting.
Yes that sounds like a very good position. Getting exposure to reporting is huge considering we cannot perform that function in audit. This will strengthen your resume very nicely.
I would disagree with most of what KPMG1 is saying. You get lots of reporting experience in audit. Sure, you don’t actually write the 10-k or q but you audit them. And you see a lot more k’s and q’s from a lot more industries and businesses in public than you would just writing the same q 3x a year and k once a year if you worked in industry.
To answer your question, sure. It would be a fine job for someone looking to leave public at staff 2 or senior 1/2 if you’ve decided you want to leave. When I was at that level I decided I didn’t want to go into industry at a level where I’m just rolling dates and updating numbers. I think a better path would be to stay in public until you could get that mgr or above level in external reporting
Plan on doing it for no more than 2 years. Use the experience to build your skill set, as part of a longer term plan
What is the exact role is it like 85% of the year writing disclosures? Do u prepare any of the supporting docs or do the business units bring u everything and u compile?
Dude, like 75% of people who leave as manager and up go into some type of external reporting role. They go into manager, sr mgr, director type roles ALL the time. Gtfo with the “we don’t have skills."
You might know how to audit “and nothing else,” but you also might just be a staff or senior and have no idea what’s going on besides ticking and tying
Please outline your skills and how they help your employer if you go into financial reporting. And please state how that is preferable to someone who has held a financial reporting job.
In general, I’ve reviewed more public filings than any senior in reporting in industry. I’ve seen a wider variety of filings from all types of companies and industries. I have a much better understand of complex accounting than someone in industry who’s sole job was to roll dates and update amounts. If anything unusual or complex comes up, someone way above the senior in industry handles it. And guess what that higher up person does first? Run to the manager, sr mgr, or partner on the audit team and ask them what to do. Guess what level of experience that higher up person in external reporting probably has? Big 4 experience beyond just 2-3 years
Your turn— what skills does a senior in external reporting looking for a manager or up job have that a manager from big 4 doesn’t have?
