Sounds dangerous. I’ve always felt when I come across the chaotic recruiting processes, it’s a giant red flag. But maybe you can bring structure to the place via your position. What are the pros & cons of the job vs your current independent consultant work?
Staying independent is preferred in the long run but it’s hard to walk away from an opportunity to have such a role and responsibility. Also a recruiter once told me that you only get offers when people see that other companies have “legitimated” you in a certain role. The calculus is more about creating a safe landing and a jumping off point for more independent consulting at the highest level.

Are you doing okay financially as an independent? Worst case scenario, you go in, cruise and collect those bennies
Yes I am but I won’t be able to do both. Surely they will expect a non-compete clause.
Based on what you shared here (no doubt just a partial picture of the situation), it sounds like you should at least follow through and see if you get an offer.
I agree with you, a chaotic recruiting process can be a red flag but it also may not be one. You should conduct your due diligence separately - e.g. contact alums on linkedin and get their perspectives
It is a great title for someone who’s not been an FTE for a while. And it that would an opportunity if I ever needed to be an FTE.
