About to be in a plane and also want to know. Seems bad.
Like SARS, this virus is a media sensation. That may be a good thing if it spurs the right risk mitigations; for most it currently bears watching but not worrying.
But for your average person in most of the world, getting the flu remains a greater risk. And influenza has killed more people in the US than this coronavirus has in China.
That’s what I’m saying!!
It’s no joke and should definitely be taken seriously as an infectious disease. That being said tho, ~500 people in China have died so far in a country of over one billion. As a comparison, last year there were nearly 80,000 deaths from the flu in the US alone.
So take standard precautions, wear a mask if you’re that worried, and practice good hand hygiene. You’ll be fine. Safe travels :)

Think it’s safe for me to go to Hong Kong right now? Have a flight then to Thailand?
Are you spending any time in Hong Kong other than airport transit? I’m transiting through China as well and will just be wearing a mask and using alcohol wipes
Trying to decide if I should book a flight to Hong Kong for end of March or hold off to see how crazy this thing gets. Parents are giving me hell for even thinking about it. Part of me says book it and worry about canceling later via trip insurance.
Ehhh I’d skip HK
I noticed a few more people with masks this week but overall it was normal.
After the worst stomach flu on top of head / sinus cold, I turned into that person who uses Clorox / germ cleaning wipes on the airplane and hotel room.
It's already a concern. Do we know how deadly this disease is yet? You can't really compare it to the flu since it's a new strain of coronavirus. Not sure how deadly it will become once it's full-on pandemic. But for now, it's right to try to stop the coronavirus from spreading and cure the people who have it. I'm not calling for mass hysteria, but of course it's a concern! We potentially have another "flu" equivalent that causes pneumonia to stick around for the ages. I don't like the sound of it. If it transmits easily in the air, you bet I'm going to ask you to cough into a sleeve if I see you sneeze into the air.
