Thoughts on the drive to Santa Fe/Taos? I know the flights are quick, but my kids really want to go on a road trip and have been asking to take ski lessons so I figure it would cover both.

In 2020, we drove to Ruidoso. Austin to Lubbock is desolate. I found it to be a brutally long/dull drive with little options to stop for food, gas, etc… and it’s not any better after Lubbock either.

Last year, we flew to ABQ and drove up to Taos. Only about 3 hours (instead of 12 hours) and you can stop in Santa Fe along the way. Much more manageable and enjoyable.

I do NOT suggest this! It takes like 17 hours just to get out of Texas. We drove to Albuquerque in high school for a fine arts festival. Driving through west Texas is NOT scenic and NOT fun. I’ll never do it again… fly and then drive from Santa Fe to Albuquerque or something like that… but you’re going to lose 2-3 days ONE WAY on the drive alone.

Nope it wasn’t… kids do add stops though, so now the OP has a range…

I just did the drive for Thanksgiving. We broke it up into two days, there and back - Austin > Amarillo > Santa Fe > Taos > Las Cruces > Austin. Honestly, it's very pretty once you hit NM and you get to see a lot of roadside attractions that you otherwise would not hit up, but if you're crunched for time, then I would recommend flying in. I liked Santa Fe much more than Taos. I wanted to check out the earthships but when we drove past near Taos, it had different vibes than what I expected.

if u do stop at Amarillo - Palo Duro Canyon is close by & a pretty neat spot for an afternoon hike!

Pretty boring drive until you cross into NM and Lubbock is almost exactly halfway. Definitely check weather, if it’s in the low 30s and has snowed, there will be ice in the mornings/evenings. Would recommend taking an SUV this time of year but otherwise easy 12 hour drive

Hey so I’m from Albuquerque and went to school at UT. I’ve done the drive a million times so I have a pretty good idea of what to expect. It would probably be a little too long of a drive from AUS to Santa Fe for Kids. Normally takes me around 11 hours to get to Albuquerque. If you can, I think you should fly into Albuquerque and drive up to Taos. It’s a lovely drive and you can stop in Santa Fe on the way up to Taos.

Yeah I only stop for gas and lunch and speed most of the way. If you broke it up, then it might work.

We found the drive to be easy when we did it in 2020 with our then 4 and 6 year olds. Not much as far as scenery and food along the way so pack snacks and charge up tablets for movies. 👌🏻

We broke up the drive by staying in Hobbs NM - mainly an oil town, but it’s fine to stay with all the stores and restaurants of a normal suburb. Also a really cool community golf course called Rockwind where you could walk around the Par 3 course with kids

I just did the drive, loved it! I recommend Ojo Santa Fe!!! Nice hot springs spa resort, stunning.

We went to Santa Fe the weekend before Thanksgiving. For us it is only 3 1/2 hours. We hit a strange fog ice storm that put back an hour. I would suggest flying from Austin to Albequerque and drive over to Santa Fe. I would say the road trip for summer.

We do this drive on the way to Colorado every year. When we had an infant we stopped in Lubbock but honestly just power through. Flights are expensive and it’s an easy drive

There’s an airline called JSX that flies direct from AUS to Taos regional! They operate out of FBO but prices are pretty reasonable
