Couple thoughts: 1. There can be a big difference in development in kids by the age of 4, however... 2. One of the biggest factors (idk if this has been studied but based on anecdotes from teachers) is whether those kids want to pre-school. A kid with 3.5 years of pre-school is going to have much more socialization and development than a kid who has had 0 years So I agree with posters that the kids who have had the privilege and advantage of going to pre-school tends to fall along racial lines, however I don't agree with them that we should get rid of or delay programs like GT. GT curricula might not seem that different to us but they are often times much rigorous and fast paced than regular curricula. In the same way that a 4 YOE with an extra 3.5 years of development have an advantage, an 8 yoe with 4 years of GT will have an advantage too. And, we need to be clear if the problem is that some people are developed more than others. As a society we want every individual to be developed to their max potential so that we have more doctors, inventors, engineers, etc. Instead of pushing GT programs back we should be expanding the GT program. Honestly if school districts weren't so wasteful and poorly run, they could totally fund free pre-school so that we can up-level as many kids as possible to GT by the age of 4. In the meantime, I think pushing GT programs out is regressive for society. I tried my hand at applying to M7 business schools earlier this year before exiting to Adobe. First gen immigrant poor single mother background, went to a shitty inner city college. You'd certainly create a more level playing by mitigating the value of a top tier MBA in a similar way they're trying to do with GT, but it doesn't actually add any value to society.

If you expand funding to help more get in then great. If you lower standards then no. I agree with pushing back the test in or allow test in periodically. The problem is there will always be those with more resources to help their kids and that’s life. Life isn’t fair. The other problem is it is not the school or teacher job responsibility to fully raise the kids. Parents are a big part and if you aren’t helping your kid or holding them accountable with their grades and work then they likely won’t succeed. I get there are single parents out there but that isn’t society’s fault that was a choice or poor choice and to blame others for having different circumstances and vilify parents that are together and work hard to be successful isn’t right. If you have a kid or kids the only person responsible for them are the parents and no one else’s responsibility to make sure they succeed.

Classic example of how “progressives” actually often make things worse. When do we start calling them “regressives”?

I'm not sure I even believe married people are more committed to each other than unmarried partners. I don't think it has any connection to children at all. If have no problem accepting it if presented with evidence, but I'm not going to assume a correlation or causation. "Common sense" tells me it's not as simple as you describe and getting married doesn't automatically make somebody a better parent.

Ridiculous. As someone who loved my magnet school growing up, regular school bored me to pieces. Let's just get rid of all tests and any form of evaluations at all, SATs and GRE is already gone. What really needs to be done is have more & better teachers who are well paid and qualified giving extra time and coaching to kids struggling. As for paying tutors to teach 4 year olds to ace the exam, that's BS. You can teach the ABCs and shapes and colors. It's not rocket science. The test is logical reasoning and awareness, like if a puzzle piece was turned around, which of the following pieces doesn't match? Developing that love for learning starts early on. This is why concerned parents are transitioning to Kumon and Montessori programs, because of poor policies like this and poor funding and bad teaching practices.

If you think income is what dictates your class then you've been seriously misled. Obama's younger daughter makes $0/year, she is not in a lower class than I am.

This is probably for the best. In my hometown the gifted program had nothing to do with intelligence or grades, it was about keeping people with money separated from those who didn't have money and typically that fell along racial lines as well.

likefunny

I'm not talking about private or magnet schools. I'm talking of the "gifted" programs in public schools that were basically school sanctioned segregation for rich white folks regardless of their intelligence. Project leader 1, funny you ask. Not in Pittsburgj but no more than an hour away. There were "tests" to get into these gifted programs too, they just were irrelevant to who actually made it in.

Let’s be real, we are still going to get our kids the best education if we feel like it. These policies impact nothing in terms of forcing the upper middle class to level the playing field.

smart

@TAM1 - let me rephrase, they can move to any low income neighborhood where there are more slots available. Low income Asians already endure excess hardship to pay for after-school educational programs. I wouldn't underestimate the lengths they will go to for their kids' education.

Depends on the logic behind the change. If it’s to provide greater equality of opportunity then it’s fine to me. If it’s based on a notion that every child is equally “gifted,” and they will do what they need to to ensure equal racial representation, then it’s not going to work.

I can see that. Testing later in grade school makes a lot of sense.

I think the idea of testing 4 year olds to see who’s gifted for the next 13 years is nuts. But I agree it won’t help unless the next move is to improve quality for all students. All high schools should offer the same honors/AP courses, for example. It’s not fair if your zoned school doesn’t even offer the resources you need to excel.

@CS - that's a fair point. Still, I think there's a strong argument for letting the more advanced students move faster, even if it's driven by age. I was a good student, and sitting in class doing nothing while the teacher helped students who needed more help was a big waste of time for me.

I used to live next to one of these schools. It was primarily Asian kids.

I’ve always suspected that Diana Moon Glampers was on de Blasio’s senior staff…
