Thoughts on "unlimited PTO" policies? I'm guessing it could be good, or terrible, depending on who's in charge of approving leave requests...

Yeah it basically mean no pto - at least if there is a set amount that doesn’t roll over most people took all the days

I love it. I take a good 4 weeks every year.

Not at all my experience at DLA. To the contrary, associate vacations seem way more protected than at my old biglaw firm with a set number of days.

Yes, agree with this. Answers here make clear that the specific vacation policy is not determinative - need to look at specific firm culture.

I’m a second year. I have peers at unlimited PTO firms who are definitely taking more than 4 weeks off. Me? Two weeks if I’m lucky.

like

The best part of unlimited PTO is when the firm transitions from limited to unlimited and pays out your unused PTO. We all had max PTO because you only used a day if you legit took a full day off and didn’t bill anything. Bill a few minutes checking email and no PTO hit. I got 4 weeks of salary paid out when we transitioned, and now I get to take all the vacation I can manage to squeeze in.

like

I have not had a true vacation since pre-COVID. Hoping to take 2 weeks abroad next Jan.

like

I took my first one-week vacation in about three years last month. Unlimited PTO can definitely mean no PTO. Actively schedule and protect your vacations, and take a three or four-day weekend a few times a year. Obviously don't do this during trial/closing/whatever your busiest time is, but just DO it! It's worth it and no one is going to encourage you to schedule time off if you don't.

like

I find it depends on the billing requirement. Doesn’t do you any good to have unlimited time off if you have to bill 2000 hours. You’d be billing a few 200 hour months to make up for extra time off

Hello fishes 🐠🐋🐟,

Please help me out here.... Your input will be really great.

I have herd that currently most of the companies are in hiring freeze. (Holiday season, recession or layoffs).

I am trying to apply job for many companies since last month, and i haven't got any response from any of them.

Are there any Organizations still out there who are hiring/open for referral and are in position to handle recession.

Please comment your thoughts. It might make someone's day.

Thanks.

I’m up for promotion this year, and I’ve been working so hard and my feedback is amazing and I’ve wanted this for awhile. Now, an immediate relative is actively dying and I may go out on a short leave, and I also have some PTO planned so that I can visit family oversees later this fall. With all that’s happening, I’m not going to hit my 90% utilization target, which is a checkbox in my promo. (cont).

I don't know who needs to hear this, but I have a few former classmates and colleagues sweating over lateral interviews. Take a deep breath and relax.

First, doing these interviews does not define you as a person.

Second, take it one day at a time; if they are moving forward, they see something in you.

Third, remember that the people interviewing you are human beings. Connect with them, be personable.

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?

V5 Legal Assistant here (2 years in industry, started at current firm in late April). I’m on pace for 2700 billable hours / year. To boot, that rate is going up because of all of the 65+ hour weeks lately, and the first month being billed around 40.

I was just told that I may not qualify for any bonuses because I haven’t been here for 1 year.

Is this normal? Am I crazy for thinking that I should be getting a *significant* bonus for all of the crazy hours and deadlines?
