Hard no.
Never work for free, unless it’s for yourself. Most UX and design folks come from “non-traditional” backgrounds — don’t sell yourself short!
There are alternative methods to build out a portfolio without subjecting yourself to free labor.
I understand you might think your choice is limited since you need experience. But a company that does not pay for an internship most likely does not have a legitimate internship program to make sure both parties get the most out of your experience there. You might not get the guidance and experience need.
Never work for free!

Hi there! I had a non-traditional design background too (illustration major, self taught designer) and my first few design jobs paid anywhere from $12-25 per hour. I never had an internship but started very small in terms of company size and budget. My opinion, you should not get less than minimum wage under any circumstances. Even if you’re an intern with no experience, you still need to afford commuting expenses and lunch at a minimum. Good luck!
It depends on the industry you’re going into. Product design internships should pay if they’re reputable- and they would probably be the highest paying ones. On the other hand, animation/film and television- the industry as a whole honestly- have a horrible reputation, and it is usually very difficult to find a paid one, or one that would even pay for rent.
I would say try to get a paid one. The only time I would take unpaid is if 1. My wallet could take the hit AND 2. The opportunity is life changingly good. I can’t say I can think of many opportunities that would tick that second box.
Absolutely not.

Hard no unless you’re entry level and can’t find a job for experience. Depending on the company, it can be worthwhile.

So many paid internship these days. Unless this one gives you unique experience that will be invaluable to your specialty, and that you won't get elsewhere, don't ever work for free!
Thank you all for these replies. I knew it wasn’t a great idea but honestly after 400+ rejections the past 5 months only bc of no experience, I feel like working for free might be the only way to get my foot in the door. I’ve been rejected for paid internships too which is crazy. So now I’m struggling with imposter syndrome x10 and considered working for free. But I’ll hang in there a little longer I guess. Appreciate your feedbacks!
We’ll approximately that many since I started applying but I know at the time I only had 2 case studies and since then I just finished 2 more projects so im hoping for better results now
Unpaid will require you to claim it as course credit. If you can’t, then you likely won’t get the internship anyway.
Either way, I highly suggest to not apply to unpaid internships. They’re unethical and exploitative, and you’re worth more than that.
No way. We hired an intern for interaction designer on a 3 month term and paid him $20/hour.
Never unpaid.
