My wife works at the VA as a clinician. My outside impression is that job security and WLB are excellent, although it’s highly bureaucratic and people progress slowly. Also, it really operates in its own bubble of the American healthcare system, so you won’t get as much exposure to some of the big industry trends such as new competitors and payer dynamics, VBC, rev cycle best practices, etc. As such, transitioning back out of the VA may be harder.
Good to know. Thanks
WLB, stability, and telework or other flexible work arrangements (depending on role). It will be exceedingly hard to transition to industry unless the organization is directly looking to grow their business through VHA (think medical device or health IT) or develop partnerships (extended health plans). Unfortunately they are behind in nearly every aspect of operations and infrastructure. Plenty of opportunities back at a federal consulting Firm, though.
