Thoughts on vacations: is it unrealistic to be left alone while you’re on vacation, even if it’s planned well in advance? Starting to feel like time away is impossible & slowly creeping into burnout

I don’t think it’s unrealistic but I think you have to be very smart about when you take the time and how you communicate it. I went into the mountains for a wedding a couple years ago and it was the most carefree vacation I’d ever had. Since then I may or may not strategically take trips to “remote locations with limited access to internet” so there’s less expectation that I’ll be working while away. I do tend to agree to work on the plane though and that’s seemed to work out.

This is the big appeal of cruises to me, or other “out of the country” type vacations

like

No. If you work hard, are a valuable member of the team, and are responsible about planning your time off (aka give everyone what they need to manage problems while you’re away), the people you work with should respect your much needed break.

like

Totally possible. BUT in my experience a few emails and calls while I’m away keeps others from effing up my files and makes my clients even more loyal that I took vacation time to help them.

like

This is why I take cruises or other out of the country trips. I find that it is me checking my email and working just as much as it is the firm. I take a cruise and do not allow myself to buy any WiFi package. First day is a little nerve wracking but then it is great!

It’s not impossible to experience a carefree vacation but as with everything else I find it is caseload permitting. When I have matters blowing then of course I’m going to need to be active. If not, I enjoy the downtime.

I should note that for this reason I’m pretty strategic about scheduling vacations and have scheduled last minute vacations to take advantage of a slower period at work.

Went to Bali last year. I checked and replied to select emails when I woke up and when I went to bed. Told everyone before I left that those were the two times of day I would be able to respond. And worked a ton before leaving to make sure everything possible was under control.

Over the holidays I took a trip to a location with a 14-hour time difference from my managers. I left instructions on how to reach me but also made it clear my internet access would be limited (hotel wifi only, no data). It was fantastic and I was able to more fully disconnect. I agree with many of the commenters above that making yourself difficult to reach does make it less likely people will bother you.

Deloitte moms, I need your guidance. For some reason, someone (not sure which team) has marked my maternity leave (LOA) starting next week on DTE and I can’t update it to show PTO. I have repeatedly told the Leaves team and MetLife that I’m not starting LOA until the baby comes (due date 10/31, no baby yet). Whom do I contact to fix the DTE issue? If this happened to you, what did you do?
