Ey1- I doubt PWC is paying for anything. They tend to hire data science graduates from India and China on H1b pay them less and over work then since they know they can't quit.
Ey4- unfortunately I can't teach myself, I need direction lol. I believe tech and data is the future. That's all the firm preaches but they have no clue on what they are doing though. I'm trying to position myself for the future. Every company would need data scientist even automotive companies are getting ready to use all the data from connected cars.
1 year isn’t a big deal in hind sight. I taught myself how to code and definitely wanna move towards technology but I haven’t really been able to figure out what I really want to do in life. You should go for it if you have a plan
Would data analytics consist of using python and SQL? What time of projects do you work on in big 4 if you are in the data analytics group
Big 4 data analytics especially PWC is child's play in my opinion. It's a lot of uninteresting work and you don't really grow. Most people think they can just jump into data science from big 4 data analytics, it's possible but you would struggle. Data science uses very sophisticated tools that it's best taking classes and having access to the best/current softwares. The program I am interested in uses a lot of the newer technology and it's for a year. I'm just being indecisive because I will be without pay for a year lol
I work on consulting engagements using SQL, Phyton but mainly for boring projects during implementation, profiling, mapping. And visualisation stuff. No interesting analytics like quant or Machine learning.
The sad part is that PWC has people doing the things you call interesting like machine learning etc but it’s nearly impossible to get involved and they don’t make it accessible to those who want to do it. Shit sucks
data science is not enough.
OP - Why would you go back to school for data science if you’re already in the field? Jw because I’m interested in switching into the data analytics group from tax.
Following
Do it. Data Scientists are in high demand, and the shift to data driven companies is only accelerating.
EY1- I admire your interest in your people and understanding workforce empowerment. This may be the difference between the best consulting firms in the future. The firms that show genuine interest and invest in their folks will definitely reap the rewards very soon. If you are in EY please take up the opportunity as your partner has advised. Most of you have a specialised background, adding analytics or data science makes you even more competitive in the future.
RSM1- There is more to Analytics than power BI.
Good. Go back to school for this. It is the future of accounting and tax.
OP - we are starting to hire people with degrees like this and are making a big push into STEM. Is there someone at PwC you could approach to see if they would pay for your degree and you stay at your firm?
EY2- what do you mean data science is not enough? I already work in data analytics at PWC . It's boring and you know how the pay goes😉. My significant other works less hours and makes 2.5 more than I do.
PwC - You don’t know unless you ask. EY does do that for high performing professionals. Also not meaning to dive into politics but the path PwC has taken in the past may not work as well under the current administrations immigration policies. Now if your GF works in the field and makes 2.5x what you do and doesn’t work as much, and this is a field you like then I would encourage you to go for it.
Which graduate program are you thinking about enrolling OP? Have you checked out Thinkful or Springboard or Level Up Data Science Bootcamps yet? I’m interested in moving this direction as well
EY Peeps - I can only speak for tax, but there are opportunities for you at EY to work in these areas. There are lots of innovation areas that the firm is moving towards. There are opportunities with the EY Foundry. I am a senior partner and don’t pretend to understand all of this and the differences between what you want to do and what we do and if the latter is boring, etc. My point is that the firm does a lot of different things. They are very very interested in these areas and you again may be able to have the firm pay for you to get some of the education you need to work in these areas and/or get experiential learning through the firm
Just out of curiosity OP, what's the program called? My SO is also looking into getting into data sciences
