Here is my take; not even related to childcare or chores but for instance most of the time independent and self sufficient people would like to do their own tasks and take care of everything because they know they would do a better/ faster/ more efficient job than other people- at least this is the case, I don’t trust people when they handle even the basic daily tasks tbh. so it’s easier to do them myself. I think this approach applies to what’s discussed in this study. Women “prefer” to take care of the household and kids because it is more “practical” this way and there is a biological factor into this too. However, I 100% do not support this, everything should be split equally, it takes two to make a home and have kids so the responsibility should be shared between both man and woman. But I would assume the reasoning behind the findings of the study is purely because women tend to be “better” at these tasks

like

Here is the study abstract: In the United States, women continue to spend more time than men do on household labor and childcare (Parker & Wang, 2013). Although these gender disparities in time use are lamented in the media as inequitable (Miller, 2020; Rao, 2019), differences in men’s and women’s preferences may help explain the disparities. In the current study, emerging adults (N = 323) and middle-aged adults (N = 113) reported (a) the degree to which they like or dislike 58 different household tasks and 40 different childcare tasks; (b) how they would prefer to split up each task with a partner; and (c) their ideal prioritization of work and family. In both samples, male–female differences in enjoyment of household and childcare tasks paralleled male–female differences in task-split preferences. For example, men liked home maintenance and yard care more than women did, and, in turn, leaned more toward wanting primary responsibility for those tasks than women did. Although there were some household tasks that men liked much more than women did and there were some household tasks and childcare tasks that women liked much more than men did (e.g., decorating the home, shopping for the children), there was not a single childcare task that men liked more than women did. Our findings imply that aims of gender equity across the board may be difficult to achieve and may also work against partners’ individual preferences. https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2021-07078-001

The abstract doesn’t say how many men vs. women participated in the study. We cannot assume 50/50. If it’s even 60/40 men, it’s going to skew the results. And why not give age ranges instead of “emerging adults” and “middle age”?!? Emerging adults could mean teenagers FFS. This study is hella suspect.

I’d wager women like stepping back just fine when there’s someone to do these tasks who is competent and not pissy/whiny about it. See, most any woman with a cleaning service or nanny.

likesmartupliftinghelpful

Yup. Also men not enjoying these tasks isn’t news. A lot of housework and childcare tasks objectively suck (nobody enjoys changing diapers) but still need to get done. That’s not an excuse to give men a pass.

like

Meh it’s hard to know when we’re swimming in social conditioning. Regardless spending more time on these tasks is harmful for achievement/equality in other arenas. So even if true it may not be desirable depending on what ones overall goals are.

THIS

What a load of BS. Please share the study.

likefunny

Because men don’t do it competently? 🙄

likesmart

Exactly my thoughts. My husband and I have equal work to do in the house. I’d just have to turn my head the other way when it comes to diaper changes and floor mopping if I don’t want to do it myself 🤪

like

If by not split household tasks equally you mean I do none of them, then yes I prefer that.

likefunny

TRUTH.

like

👎 personally much prefer an equal split on childcare tasks. Enjoying a particular type of task relatively more than your spouse /= preferring unequal split and /= actually liking a task. Can’t read the full study from your screenshot but I already think the conclusions are overinterpreted :)

like

We had twins so an equal split was a necessity. And my husband also loved taking care of the infants/babies. He was more confident about it then I was and he didn’t mind changing the diapers (whereas I did not like it). I think it really depends. We both worked full-time.

I'd like to see this study. The way I see it, this doesn't necessarily mean women prefer to do these chores, but rather just because men don't/don't want to, someone still has to take care of the children. So is it that women have to prefer it because things need to get done regardless and don't want a half assed attempt?

like

Exactly. It could be resolving the cognitive dissonance why women say they prefer the work

like

If the choice is between playing with my kid and doing the dishes, yeah I prefer to take the childcare responsibilities. If the choice is I do everything or it doesn’t get done, I’d rather do it then it not get done, but no I don’t prefer taking all the childcare responsibilities and want to split them

like

At the end of the day with studies like this, I always go back to “who cares?” I mean this in the best way possible. Like if a study tells me 80% of people like oranges, and I hate oranges, it doesn’t change the choices I make in my life to not eat oranges. And I fully understand another person may feel differently and make different choices - good for them.

like

Well that might be because letting DH take on certain tasks means they’re not done right. Dishes need to get re-washed and any repairs my husband attempts ultimately mean I have to hire a professional to fix an even bigger problem.

likefunny

Firstly, who likes chores?!?

I do agree with this. Female fish and my opinion is you can’t fight hormones, biology and nature. Im atheist and don’t believe in traditional values, men and women can totally do the same exact thing and when they do, they should get paid for it equally. However, given all circumstances equal women are built for nurturing. We want to fight our animal nature so bad because of all the previous history of men abusing women cause they could we are not heading to the other direction and fighting our own nature. This does not mean men can’t take care of children either sure they can, but if all this BS social norms and image of power and equality wasn’t a thing, in our natural habitat, most of our men would be more aligned with being providers and most women would be more aligned in raising the next gen. And there is nothing wrong or better about one or another. Equally important for our survival

Agree with this to an extent, mostly related to child care duties since I want to be with the kids. Also feel this in thinking about budgeting, managing our day to day lives, etc. - I just enjoy those things!

Dept goes to CCO concerned about company culture and the lack of respect and inclusion they experience. They want to brainstorm about how to change this. CCO states no one actually cares about compliance, defends the culture, and tells the team that they need to change or accept. CCO then gives team the cold shoulder/makes snarky comments in writing and verbally that team can’t require depts to “do stuff” and “endear” itself to them at the same time. Team is angry and bewildered. Contd.

I usually join a meeting saying "hey guys".. I've always done this.. the other day someone in the call pointed out that not everyone in the meeting were male.. I was slightly taken aback . I use the term 'guys' in a completely gender neutral sense and thought that was the norm.. am I totally in the wrong here?

We are working on a new deck template for my firm. I took a look yesterday and saw that all the pictures included were of white people. I’m a WOC and I asked the person in charge (white) to either replace people with landscapes to make it people agnostic or add inclusive pictures. She straight up refused to change them and said people can change them as needed for clients. To me, it is really about diversity and inclusion and I want to take to her manager. Am I making a bigger deal than it is?

I am looking to gain certification or other credentialing in diversity and inclusion, not only because it would look good on my resume both for future job-search purposes and also to become better educated in this area, which is growing in importance. I looked at SHRM's "Inclusive Workplace Culture Specialty Credential" and got a bit of "sticker shock" at the cost - $1,655.00 for members. Does anyone have other suggestions on training/credentialing in this area?

Inclusiveness vs diversity: I think internally, inclusiveness is extremely important, and advantageous to a firm. Recruiting efforts however, should be race/creed/color/protected party agnostic.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know.
