Hi, so I’m being counseled out and I’m applying for a firm that really cares about recommendations. I’m 2 years out of school and leaving my first job since graduation. Should I just hit up old managers/partners that I kept up with for recs and feel I have a good enough relationship with? Even if my reviews were mediocre, they wouldn’t actually say anything negative right? Thanks for the help.

Any thoughts on asking a hiring manager to speak to one of his/her employees without the manager being present to get a good feel for the culture?

Do you think there’s a glass ceiling for out gay employees? I’ve been with my (now) husband for the last two decades and had three positions. I’ve absolutely excelled in each, winning awards, exceeding goals, working well. But with each position, I’ve had difficulty getting promoted. I even took on the responsibilities of a senior director after his firing and I couldn’t get promoted. My handpicked successor — who I think is an excellent marketer — became a director almost immediately.
