Throughout the pandemic I was struggling with feeling burnt out. I seemed to always have bad brain fog and no energy. I liked my job/company but thought I couldn’t handle it, so I left about year ago. Now I’m in a super laid back job which I find boring AF and feel the exact same way. I’m starting to wonder if lack of physical activity is taking a toll on me as I get older and that’s why I feel this way. Could that be? I also think WFH too much attributes to it. Any tips on how to get over this?

I’m 32 for reference. Not obese but very slightly overweight. Was always skinny until the age of 29/30.

I had a similar experience with job burnout and ended up with a chronic illness from it. Now I also have a more chill job (I wouldn't call it boring, but I feel like I have more ownership over my work/life balance finally).

One thing that's helped me is finding a physical activity that I'm passionate about- something to train for because the idea of getting better excites me and opens up doors to new adventures! That could anything like hiking, biking, skiing, surfing, climbing, etc. (For me it was climbing!) I highly recommend finding some sort of activity that challenges you mentally and physically.

like

Same. I used to love dance in college. Will be doing ballroom dance 3X a week. Telling myself to hit the gym just wasn’t happening.

like

It likely is not associated with the job or level of activity. A lot of people have brain fog regardless of age. It’s more related to our diets, although there’s no way to tell for sure. It could also be related to candida or other bacteria in the gut or other health related issue. Don’t panic because I am not referring to major health issues, just referring to minor things unique to our bodies or health. The best thing to try for brain fog is a very clean diet, avoid processed foods and extra sugar. Get good sleep and good self care.

like

Same for me. That’s why I said ‘extra sugar’ because I know it’s hard to totally get rid of. I try to use maple syrup or honey to sweeten things instead of white sugar though and put the least that I can.

You definitely need to exercise at least four to five times a week. That doesn't include a job either. That's vigorous exercise that gets your heart rate up. It's a struggle at first to get started but once you did for a while you will definitely feel better. Just like lifting weights. Eventually you get stronger and you have better endurance.

I had an office job for years, now I WFH as well. Also felt very very foggy, always tried, etc. just as you said. Figured new career and WFH would help, and it has, just a little.. but still need to do more.

Echoing what most said… but I’ll add something that I didn’t see mentioned.

It’s diet and lack of physical active (likely). I couldn’t get myself to the gym, so I got a peloton and I signed up on rover (dog sitting app). I still need to use the peloton more, but it does help that my best friends bought one as well… So we hope to try and keep each other accountable. Also… I love dogs and in general, they are always happy and full of energy. Having their positive energy around, has been good for me… Plus they need to be walked ( not letting them pee on my nice floors is a huge motivator haha) so it forces me to get up and at least get some exercise no matter how lazy I want to be. Also… It’s actually pretty decent money, (over 1k per month averaging) so i’ve been using extra income to have healthy meals delivered, treat / reward myself with some nice toys, do some renovations, and buy my fiancé and mother surprise gifts. I’m even doing something I never thought I would do, which is buying a few of my neighbors Christmas presents.
All to say… I found a nice cross-section of things I like, which also happen to be a workout, and a benefit to my life and others, also helps me healthwise & monetarily speaking.

Take some time, sit down, and really focus, and come up with a plan/strategy. I’m not sure if you’re in a relationship, but if your significant other knows you, well, have them try to bounce off a few ideas!

I hope this helps! I wish you all the best!

I think I’m going through something similar in terms of burnout and inactivity so I am not the best person for advice, but what I’m trying to do now is small exercises at home whether it’s jumping jacks or high knees when I’m watching shows, just so that I’m not completely sedentary.

How healthy is your diet? Mine isn’t, and I think that’s a big contributor.

like

For me, it was related to diet, motion (some exercise to counter the sedentary job), and knowing who you truly are. Knowing who you truly are, not the false identities that our dysfunctional families give us, will help make sure you are in the right job for you.

I think you’re settled and content, which is good, but doesn’t really produce much energy. Your body literally does not need to be energized much in order to survive. Unfortunately, the only way to change this is to artificially workout, or get yourself in an actual survival situation….dont do #2 lol

I worked for a company that before COVID,was actually pretty respectable. When COVID became part of our lives, mandates both forced and precautionary demolished in some cases,an already lazy workforce. It was crazy. Our individual workloads were slashed and the folks that didn't like working anyway, sought to make those protocols permanent. I was considered essential,so off to work I went. I tried everything to get back to that sense of normalcy because that is where I thrived. Not that I was some big wig making things happen, but because I would get into this zone and pick up and drop off would become almost mechanical. I missed this horribly and resented all the things I found to be fake precautions, that were put in place. With so much less to do,I sweat less, ate the same and gained weight. My body is begging for a job where maybe I mix driving with a physical aspect as a bigger part of the job. I didn't lose mental awareness,I was forcefully required to think less, observe less, interact less. I became frustrated with people that already didn't want to do their jobs, wanting to do even less and drag me into that zone. Now I'm in constant pain from arthritis and lack of physical activity. I want to know how I can get past the pain and into more physical activity. When anyone finds out, please tell me. Thanks for always listening.

Yes, physical activity is a necessity in all ways. Jesus Christ. If u need motivation to get off your a&$, go visit cole Robinson’s YouTube page called Snake Diet. Clearly you need a reality check on your lifestyle to counteract the symptoms you list as well as additional ones you haven’t shared. Good luck, hope you take action.
