Tips for being successful at student teaching after being a Classroom Aide for 8 years. Also, what should I get my cooperating teacher, and should I give her a gift in the beginning and end or just at the end?

Don’t take any student actions personally.

Get a small notebook. At the end of each day or each week, write anything amazing in the front of the notebook. Write anything that upset you in the back. Don’t emote or go into detail. This isn’t a diary. Just record the basics of what happened. Don’t force it either. This isn’t a gratitude journal. If you weren’t upset, don’t record anything. If you didn’t see anything amazing, don’t record anything. Also record dates. This has a couple purposes. On hard days, go back and look at good vs bad. Usually, good far outnumbers bad, but we often don’t remember it that way. Also watch for patterns of good and bad. What upsets you? Is it something you can adjust from your own perspective? If it something a classroom management standpoint can adjust? And when do you get upset? Is it around holidays? Winter? Hormonal cycles? Particular people? Some influences can’t be changed, but if you’re aware of what outside triggers you have, you can sometimes prepare and cope more efficiently.

As for gifts, my favorite are always thank you notes. Handmade is good. Don’t worry about buying something. Sharing thanks at the end of the year is sometimes the best thing you can give a tired teacher who wonders if they made a difference at all.

This is such amazing advice. It's so good that I'm going to do this, keep the small notebook, and it's my 14th year, this year😊

Listen to your cooperating teacher, be adaptable, accept that you will make mistakes and learn from them. Good luck!

A lot of good advice here. A few other things to do…
1. Shadow a student (ELL/SPED etc). See what their day is like. It will help you plan better.

2. See if you can sit in on other classrooms/grades before you’ve started taking over your class. Or as you’re wrapping up. Knowing what other grades are doing is incredibly useful. Plus you never know which grade you’ll end up teaching down the line.

3. Apply feedback from your cooperating teacher. They will have a role in grading you.

4. Ask another teacher to watch a lesson. It’s always good to get another perspective.

Listen to your cooperating teacher and follow their lead, especially if it's something that saves time.

Try lots of types of lessons and activities to find out what works for you.

Gifts are appropriate. I would wait until the end.

Of course it's not necessary. That's why it's called a gift.

It's not inappropriate if someone chooses to give one, though.

Wait until.the end of the year especially to see if you will we work well together or clash. Do your job with passion it's about the kids.
