Have a discreet paper with high level casing frameworks. If you’ve cased enough you probably won’t even need to glance at it, but it can really help spur your brain in the one minute you have to structure. It also just helps to reduce general anxiety. I’m not recommending you copy the framework verbatim in the interview and definitely don’t look like you are reading something, but it’s just a nice support to have. And don’t use a calculator, this is much harder to play off and your really should just rely on mental math, rounding, and estimation.
Other general best practices:
- Make sure lighting is good and you are in a distraction free environment
-Clearly explain your framework and process of approaching the problem. You can’t show them your work, so make sure you talk them through in a thorough but concise manner. If they cant
follow the logic, they probably won’t expect a client to either
- If you don’t know an answer on something, say you aren’t certain but will revert after learning (I.e. benchmarking, speaking to internal experts, running experiment, etc). You aren’t expected to know everything but you do need to know how to reach the answer
- At the end of the case as you are giving a conclusion and sharing risks, possibly use this as an opportunity to share that the firm has a lot of internal expertise in their next steps and would be happy to assist in the transformation/implementation etc (this shows you can promote the firm and understand the consulting business model). Don’t go overboard and act like a partner obviously, but it’s just a little touch you might remember
Thank you so much! I appreciate the insight and tips
1/ make sure all technical stuff works (mic/speakers/cam). No-brainer but some candidates still join the call and “they are on mute” and cannot unmute
2/ background blur or good professional background
3/ I still like eye contact from time to time, although it is virtual. So flirt that cam from time to time
4/ Use body language as in face to face. This is a tricky one because you can also overdo it. What I mean is, when somebody says it and you understand it, tilt your head a bit to show you get it.
I’ll be sure to do this. Thank you!

In addition to what others have said the biggest thing people forget to do in a zoom case is show interest and enthusiasm. It feels like you're talking to robots now. It's something I have had to adjust to while working with clients over zoom.
Remember to lean forward towards the camera from time to time, put energy and enthusiasm into your voice a few times.
Great pointers, thank you
Have a calculator somewhere closeby, really helped me out with the stupid mental math questions
Use power or tenth for big numbers.
