Build yourself a very nice set of precedents - buy side, sell side, negotiated turns etc. - and recycle. You’ll be amazed at how much we do is a restatement of things already done and the more you recycle the more you refine and the better you get at holding the pen.
Master the art of the iManage search. Every individual piece of the thing you're doing has almost certainly been done before. Your challenge is to put all the pieces together correctly.
I lateraled from a firm with NetDocs to a firm with iManage and felt the exact opposite. NetDocs had comparable search features that frankly felt more intuitive and seemed to give better search results.
If it is a big firm and you have access to Practical Law, that is an invaluable resource. It gives you drafting notes for different situations and honestly, big firms I’ve worked for seem to wholesale take from it. You should learn a lot more doing this than searching iManage, especially if you don’t know the area that well. That said, use iManage for comparison and especially for format and style.
Agree with getting a nice set of precedents, but I've noticed lately that I prefer to do iManage searches so updates/newer versions also appear (sometimes state codes that may be referenced in consents change, etc.). I save my precedents so they also come up in the searches. That way I don't have to look through precedents and do a search for more recent precedents. Meaning, I get it down to one step instead of two. Hope this helps. It will get easier as you do it more, as with most things. :)
Hey if your interested, we’re building a reviewing and drafting plug-in Microsoft word. That takes precious precendents and breaks it down into clauses for re-use. We also allow you to track definitions and defining mistakes. DM me if your interested.
