Tips for first shoot abroad? (Ok let's be real it's my first actual shoot 😬). Thanks.

Have a local production, like any local production make sure you have a bid letter and everything you need is included. Where are casting and post done? Make sure you will have options, language will not be an issue (does talent need to speak native English but being cast locally? Will you need dubbing?) Think also transfer time for the assets and time difference if your post is done there, how does it fit with your schedule. How about weather day? Do you have a risk to have the shoot postponed and get extra production cost + extra costs for the team brought over seas? Check also currencies and change rate, are you being charged in local currency? How can it influence your actual total production budget. Check insurances, what are your requirements and are the local policies covering what you need? Will local or US union be involved?

1) Make sure you have a good fixer.

2) Make sure anyone carrying equipment has a carnet, and apply in advance. Carnets sometimes require a hefty deposit and they can take time to setup if they aren't already in place, but they are necessary to travel gear between the US and most countries in Europe.

3) Apply for Global Entry if you haven't already.

4) Bring a good small camera. Leica Q or Sony Rx100 III types are great because of how unobtrusive they are.

5) if you're into travel, plan days off or ask for comp time to travel while you're already out there.

6) Enjoy it.

Regarding the actual shoot day. Just try to stay on top of the activity on set.
Make sure you’re staying on or as close to on time as possible.

Those OT charges rack up real fast and if you end up with overages make sure you’re running them by someone before you just sign off so there’s no drama when you return to the states and start actualizing your job.

Take notes regarding your talent and their contracts. Make sure all the paperwork is signed and correct and when in doubt ask questions.

There’s nothing wrong with questions especially when you have a business manager there to work with you.

Remember they are your 1st line of defense in case shit goes left so keep them updated and that way they can offer solutions and provide standouts regarding tentative issues.

Good luck and enjoy yourself!

How is your title “Integrated Producer” if you’ve never been on a shoot before? Shouldn’t you be an assistant producer or associate?

like

Ask for a translation of the talent contracts in English and make sure it’s either attached to the original contract or the talent signs both versions.

Also check state department guidelines where you're going for safety guidelines.

Consider shipping and customs issues if you’re meant to capture specific products. US and EU Products can often look different. Get a customs guy on the EU side to help with bringing what you need over.

like

If you're bringing gear- don't forget the outlets are different and can affect your power / charging situation. (Also make sure to register your stuff so you can. Ring it back into the country).
I saw it in an earlier post but always a good idea to work with local folks!

I just wish I had that CD money so I could afford a Leica Q.

A fixer is basically a local who can find you the stuff you need and mete out agreements.

Depends what you're doing and where it is exactly.

Eastern Europe, 12 days. One 3:30 spot

If your company is an AICP call them and ask for advice.

You guys rock thanks for the insight 🤗 now I have more questions haha

@Director1 A lot of good questions and thankfully (and also regrettably) I've had about a year of planning on this project. Will be careful with bid letter, I have a very good business manager and EP and we've been going over language and options with a fine-tooth comb. Casting done in UK, post back here in NY. Honestly we are having some issues finding 1 OCP with the accent but have another casting on Mon (fingers crossed). Weather not terribly worried since we are shooting indoors at a soundstage. Currency and insurance has been evaluated. We are doing buyouts so no union. Do you have any tips on...etiquette? I guess what I mean during the shoot itself. Just don't know what flow will be and how I can help (but I shall find out 😉) thanks again!!

@CD1 eek what's a fixer? And thank you. God I wish I had more time to travel :(

@BAM1 thank you! 😊

@EP2 it's the title I was given when I interviewed based on my background.

Just got let go and my manager said part of it was because I was looking for other jobs. I didn't look for other jobs at work, so I'm not sure how they could have known that unless a coworker snitched on me. Is it worth it to try and find out who or should I just leave it? Can't deny that I'm seriously pissed off about it.

Question about what’s realistic: My boss, vp of marketing, is dead set on working with an agency who can produce multiple videos over the course of several small shoots so that we can iterate on what’s working. From my experience, this would cost a lot more than our budget (80k) and would ultimately be more expensive than one larger shoot with more deliverables. Videos are short, 10s or less and without a real narrative — more just for a sizzle reel kind of thing. Thoughts? Nyc based.
