I’ve done both. In house is NOT creative.
But lots of people are over 32 years old... that’s nice given no one is getting younger (literally),
Honestly... LinkedIn. Aside from that. Pros: 9-5. Old-school job security (something ad people probably have never experienced before). Way better benefits than an ad agency could ever dream of, not even close. Decision-makers / people with answers are sitting a few desks away from you, which can make much of the process a lot smoother than at an agency. The cons: because corporate hierarchy, your title can take a hit (hello, 40 y.o. ACD!), even if financially and responsibility-wise you’re about right. Working on one brand gets old fast. Maddening amounts of inconsequential work (think internal campaigns, banners, offers, etc.). You see all the sexy work go to the external agencies - it’s infuriating because you know you’d have cracked the brief - maybe even better and sold it. Meanwhile you’re fighting to get cheap-ass organic social posts produced like starving creative vultures who haven’t seen a brief for real creative in at least 18 months. Did I mention how corporate it is?
Yes, I think generally it pays better
Agree with ACD 1, 1000%. The hours and benefits are the best parts. Otherwise, it’s pretty boring in house and you’ll focus on your specific role with no room to expand (God forbid you step into others remits). And this could be my own experience, but it’ll be hard or impossible to see your impact on the bottom line, unless you’re sales or biz dev.
ACD 1 are you still there? How long have you been in corporate?
We’re one of the largest advertisers in the country. At some point we’ve had over a dozen agencies working on separate parts of the business. To the CMOs credit he’s streamlined it to less than half of that now.
