Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service

Note what you love about it, and give notes in regards to what will sell this director to the client and anything that totally doesn't align with your vision. The director has a level of expertise that we're hiring them for, so I try not to be too nitpicky with their treatment to show them a level of creative trust.
The treatment is all the client has to go on, so make sure it gives all the right reasons you feel you should hire them and makes the client comfortable with hiring them.
Read it throughly and start with questions. “Do you have a reference in mind?” Go through all the client concerns in your head and see if there an approach that ignores them. Or would fly counter to what you know you Need to achieve. Mostly we ask a lot of questions and see if the director would be amenable to adding a section on this or that (depending on whether or not it’s something the client would want to see). As an example; If all the Reference images really dark and moody, but we knew the client had asked for it to be optimistic and bright several times, we might bring this up. And ask the question “did you see it being as dark and moody as your reference images? Or are these just examples for composition? “And if it’s the latter, we would ask if maybe they would be OK changing a few of the reference images to something a little more bright and optimistic. Just as an example. or if it’s a car commercial, and we know the car is the whole focus, You would ask the director to add a little write up on how they would plan to treat the cars. So that they stand out, or look sexy, or look exciting, basically whatever we need to communicate. A lot of junior teams take these calls with directors, and feel as though they can’t ask any questions, or ask for anything. But in a sense, he’s working for you. And you have a job to achieve with this commercial, so now is your chance to work with them collaboratively to make sure you’re getting what you need to. And don’t forget to say how much you love it of course :)
