Bring a detailed list of your projects and accomplishments, including your role and the impact of the project. Include any data you have (stayed on budget/time, no team turnover, campaign metrics, happy client, etc). Begin to prove our more strategic role vs tactical. Look up the job description above you and tick off every item on it, and include examples of how you’ve accomplished that and sustained that performance. You should be prepped so they have no reason to deny. Also fwiw most promos only come at review time.

Definitely agree with comparing the job descriptions, that also shows initiative that you're thinking about it. Then you can find out if your supervisor feels you are making progress and ask any questions about how to gain experience in areas you haven't touched on yet

Personally, I started having conversations with my supervisor at about 6 months...I didn't want to seem like I was getting ahead of myself but after I was more comfortable in my role I always make sure to ask every month at my 1 on 1 about what I do right/can improve on and what the expectation is for an AE vs AAE. Now 6 months later at my annual review I was told (off the record) that I will be put up for a promo. I feel it's always best to keep a dialogue so you know you're on the right track and getting feedback along the way. Don't get me wrong I was trying to actively get feedback even before 6 months but I didn't gear the conversation towards promotion as much as am I just on the right track to being a good account person. Trying to keep tabs yourself and then bringing a list at the end seems risky, if you aren't talking openly you both may have very different visions of progress you feel you've made. My supervisor told me straight up, part of the way to show you're working towards promotion is to ask the question early...it shows you're actively thinking about how you can do better and start taking on more of the next level type responsibilities to show you're ready to be in that role. Hope this helps!

I live in a HCOL city and am still not being paid enough to save/live . I have all of the tools/ skill sets to leave consulting and go into big tech . Before going out to market myself and get a new job should I even ask D for a raise ? I’m frustrated because I’m adding a lot of value to my current engagements and I think I’d have a good business case for a raise. On a side note I see people leaving left and right here which is not a good sign!

A colleague shared with me the presentation they have prepared for their promotion case. I worked with them on multiple projects during the year and I can clearly see that some of the claims on the deck are wild exaggeration or lies. For example, managed changes in scope for Project X including contract changes. Plot twist: there never was a change of scope for Project X and the contract is exactly the same. How can people be so dishonest? How far can you go before truth catching up?

Where do y’all see the future of M7 going? In the next 20-30 years. Will there still be an M7 or will MBAs be obsolete as more and more elite companies do direct promotion? Will HSW still exist or will the value prop of a brand name be diminished a ton with the continuous rise of tech/AI, etc?

I was due for a promotion but then covid hit, and during the peak of layoffs/furloughs, I was given the run-around that we have agency wide promotion freezes, etc. Over the past month, a handful of people have been promoted. I know everyone's situation is different but I can't help feeling snubbed. How do I know whether they are genuinely trying to promote me and can't, versus them stringing me along for as long as possible? I dont want it to come to having to bring another offer to the table..

Question— do you share your comp with close friends? Me and my roommate have been friends forever and while I don’t really share my specific pay, Im not sure if I should share it with her. When she got promoted she told me her comp tho I didn’t ask. Today I found out I was promoted (🎉) and left that part out. She asked me if I knew what my raise would be and I just told her the % but not the actual amount. Is that unnecessarily secretive? We’re in diff industries too.

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this from others? Thanks

From talking to students at multiple M7 schools, it seems like all of the BB/MBB/FAANG companies recruit at most if not all of the schools . So if you're planning on recruiting for one of these, is there really a major difference in career opportunities between each school? Asking because it seems like some schools are specifically known for finance vs consulting vs tech, but if the companies are all recruiting at all these schools, the differences don't seem as pronounced to me.
