I just lateraled to a large firm and used the argument portion of a MSJ brief I drafted with a one paragraph section summarizing the procedural history/facts. Keep it short - 7-8 pages max.

💯

5-10 pages in length, as much your own work as possible, preferably something written in practice. You want to pick something that clearly displays your ability to (1) analyze the law, and (2) tell a story. Privileged material is permissible so long as you thoroughly redact all identifying/privileged information.

For an appeals role at the Manhattan DA, and for a weird federal clerkship role (4 years post grad from big ish law) I pulled a section of an appellate brief, with an explanation of what I wrote and what was edited (and the opinion on that issue). Was enough to get to final round for each. I’m sure a section of a brief is fine. Even better if you have your original draft.

I would use a status report, scrubbed of privileged material.

I would submit the sample where u wrote a few portions and on your interview expand what research you did on those portions.

What type of role are you applying to?

Associate at a Plaintiff side employment firm

I should add — the position I’m applying to is in Plaintiff side employment law and that’s the type of work I did as a summer associate, so I wonder if I should include a brief from that summer even though it was in the summer of 2018 and my writing has proved substantially since then

I've always considered my current job temporary, I needed something and all I could get after graduating into the pandemic hiring stalemate was at a small company in my home town doing a job that isn't quite my specialty. My lease is up here in October and I want to leave the area. When is the best time to tell my bosses I'm planning on leaving? I don't want to snub them with too short of notice and I don't want to give them too much notice and make for an awkward work environment. Any advice?

I just had a SQL tech screen for a leadership level position and I must admit that I made more mistakes than I was comfortable with. I described the strategy fairly well and got the query close to the finish line, but each question I answered required 1-2 inputs from the interviewer. It’s been many years since I even touched SQL. Have you made mistakes on tech interviews and still got to final round?

Any fish here dealt with a lonely/toxic parent? I recently came to the realization that my mom is toxic (think guilt-tripping, saying mother-child bond is sacred, making comparisons, etc.) and has become very dependent of me, and as much as I want to be there I can only do so much since I have a family myself. She refuses to move to a nursing/retirement home, look for companionship, and seek professional help for tasks she needs done such as car maintenance, insurance inquiries, etc. (Cont’d)

The partner I work for has (repeatedly) said the reason the firm has high associate turnover is because the associates who have left “aren’t cut out for litigation” or they were not “willing to make the sacrifices” that the job requires. I feel like this is totally misguided and missed the point? The associates have been leaving because they’re over worked, underpaid and want to be treated well? Or am I just jaded because I’m in ID?
